cricket Posted September 3, 2005 Posted September 3, 2005 Do you sometimes feel the need to suddenly say something that's "OFF TOPIC"? Do you twitch with the urge to shout out something that's totally out of line? If you've answered yes to either of these questions, here is the place for you! Post anything you like, as long as it's OFF TOPIC. Anything that is not OFF TOPIC will be rejected as unworthy conversation and you will asked to move your post elsewhere! Quote

cricket Posted September 4, 2005 Author Posted September 4, 2005 God is often referred to as the Master Gardener; why don't we also refer to Him as the Great Fashion Designer? After all, He was the first to design clothes for us; His designs were such the rage that EVERYBODY was wearing them! Quote

Michelle Posted September 4, 2005 Posted September 4, 2005 My two favorite chase scenes: Both from Wallace and Gromit movies. The first is the railroad scene where Gromit frantically puts down spare track on the model railroad while the penguin coasts alongside on the tender. The second is where the motorcycle sidecar turns into a fighter plane complete with a porridge shooter. Too funny! M Quote

aka Posted September 4, 2005 Posted September 4, 2005 [:"blue"] Why not buy an electric car? [/] Electric car scores over the traditional fuel cars...... Recharging off peak -- An EV charges overnight during off-peak periods of electric usage at a special low rate using clean-source electicity at a low rate. It starts out every morning completely full. Quick and fast --- The electric motor delivers its maximum power at a standing start, leading to quick acceleration. Maximum speed of EV+ is electronically limited to about 85 mph. Ample Range --- About 100 miles per charge... or up to 200 miles per day if you "plug-in" at work. Take it anywhere --- No exhaust fumes, no smog checks, oil changes or leaks. Quiet --- No start up engine roar, just concentrate on driving. Reliable --- Brushless motor has one moving part, no wrist pins, fuel pump, rods, cams, valves, carb, smog pump, gas tank, transmission, clutch, flywheel, starter motor, distributor, spark plugs, crankshaft, head gasket, oil seal, oil pump, valve lifters, piston rings, pistons, etc., etc. -- thousands of things that cannot go wrong with an EV! An EV can be powered by hi-tech lead acid batteries (up to 110 miles range) or Nickel Metal Hydride ("NiMH") batteries (120 to 140 miles range, or more, as battery technology advances). Regenerative braking -- When you take your foot off the accelerator, the motor becomes a generator, sucking the energy of motion back into the battery. ABS brakes are automatically applied in emergency stops. Energy spent climbing uphill is recovered on the way down, rather than wasted burning up brakes. Regenerative braking makes driving in stop-and-go rush hour traffic smooth and effortless. Electric Vehicle uses no power when stopped --- Gas engines are inefficient at low speed, but an EV motor has no need to idle. Zero smog --- Modern hi-tech natural gas power plants are about 97% cleaner than the cleanest conventional car Easy to drive --- No clutch, no gear shift, full power is available as soon as you step on the pedal. People who take a test drive, just start driving! You just concentrate on steering and stopping, there is no engine to start, no clutch to engage, no difficult hill-side starts, no problem with stalling, no tense parallel parking episodes. Michelle Posted September 4, 2005 Posted September 4, 2005 Currently in Beijing there is a scam going on involving art students. Western-looking visitors are targeted by attractive young students asking them if they speak English. If they respond in the affirmative, they are invited to a "free art show." Once there, they are coerced into buying art for quite a high fee (not sure the tactics used). I was approached by 5 of these students in the Forbidden City. Another scam is similar but involves a "tea house" invitation. People are invited to some kind of a tea house demonstration, and after the program they are charged outrageous amounts of money for their tea (a British couple taken in by the scam were charged 30 POUNDS for their tea!). So if you're traveling to Beijing in the near future, don't say I didn't warn you. M Quote
