President Obama, in his statement hailing the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act, promised that he wouldn’t try to force religious institutions to conduct gay marriages.

“On an issue as sensitive as this, knowing that Americans hold a wide range of views based on deeply held beliefs, maintaining our nation’s commitment to religious freedom is also vital,” Obama said. “How religious institutions define and consecrate marriage has always been up to those institutions. Nothing about this decision — which applies only to civil marriages — changes that.”

Here’s guessing that the Roman Catholics and other religious groups that are in the midst of fighting the contraception mandate are skeptical of that pledge.

“[T]he administration believes that this proposal strikes the appropriate balance between respecting religious beliefs and increasing access to important preventive services,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said when the mandate was first unveiled last January.

Here’s Obama’s full statement:

I applaud the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act. This was discrimination enshrined in law. It treated loving, committed gay and lesbian couples as a separate and lesser class of people. The Supreme Court has righted that wrong, and our country is better off for it. We are a people who declared that we are all created equal — and the love we commit to one another must be equal as well.

This ruling is a victory for couples who have long fought for equal treatment under the law; for children whose parents’ marriages will now be recognized, rightly, as legitimate; for families that, at long last, will get the respect and protection they deserve; and for friends and supporters who have wanted nothing more than to see their loved ones treated fairly and have worked hard to persuade their nation to change for the better.

So we welcome today’s decision, and I’ve directed the Attorney General to work with other members of my Cabinet to review all relevant federal statutes to ensure this decision, including its implications for Federal benefits and obligations, is implemented swiftly and smoothly.

On an issue as sensitive as this, knowing that Americans hold a wide range of views based on deeply held beliefs, maintaining our nation’s commitment to religious freedom is also vital. How religious institutions define and consecrate marriage has always been up to those institutions. Nothing about this decision – which applies only to civil marriages – changes that.

The laws of our land are catching up to the fundamental truth that millions of Americans hold in our hearts: when all Americans are treated as equal, no matter who they are or whom they love, we are all more free.

Why some would believe this man I have no idea. Like Obamacare,keep your Dr,reduction on average of 2500.00 per family for premiums,He was not in favor of gay marriage and other rather questionable claims.

Why shouldn't gay marriage be allowed or demanded be performed in churches?Isn't fair otherwise.

Soon it will be a bigger push for plural marriage and why not.How can we discriminate against a man that "loves' three or more women?

The coming persecution of those holding to the Word by the homosexual community was predictable long before we got to this point.

From the political, we get another push to the prophetic - Apostate Christendom speeds toward further apostasy...either by a complete melt-down of morality, or by the provoking of Fallen Christendom (the Earth Beast) to self-righteously rise up and wage war against those already at war against them.

From what I understand of EGW on the last days' events...the final movements come as the earth's governments fear the people they rule over...particularly in the US. As of today, government in the US decidedly does NOT fear the people, and does NOT fear Christendom at all. Indeed, it wages war against both; something catastrophic is coming which will change this.

I'm agreed. I've thought this for a long time. A financial meltdown of Biblical proportions, which looks like it's just around the corner as that's what Obama wants, would be just the thing.

I think that fear is the very reason it is waging the war. It fears the people, and is trying to take steps to secure itself from us. That is also why they want so badly to disarm us. Fear.

Because they either know that the people are catching on, or they fear that they will.

Points considered - maybe they do fear being caught playing this little game, but I still don't think they fear the American "Little Guy" at all.

The American "Little Guy" has accepted the proposition he is a victim in need of being taken care of, rather than adhering to the identity of being self-reliant and independent with respect to the government and society at large. The Little Guy, by and large, cares not a whit about things except as his checks keep rolling in - everything outside his little sphere really doesn't concern him. All he is concerned with is that his lifestyle will go on. Being bought and paid for, the Little Guy poses no threat, and thus is not feared by either party.

If the representatives feared the American population, then they would vote and serve as if they did. However, the Senate passes bills without reading them, and the President governs contrary to the will of the American populace. The president's party has been very successful in detaching the President from the manner in which this country is run - hence the polls showing the President's favorable levels not dropping in sync with the polls showing Americans are decidedly in agreement the country is NOT on the right track (and detest the manner the country is run).

Our elected officials have off-loaded most of the "hands-on" running of policies to faceless bureaucrats, so that when something goes horribly wrong (I think of the IRS scandals here), elected officials can plausibly deny involvement and skirt the blame by pointing to these bureaucrats.

The elected officials know the elections are rigged far in their favor for re-election. Both parties are about keeping the apparatus of power intact, rather than serving the people who elected them as representatives. Both parties know the media promotes political authoritarianism, and play to that.

This does not look like a portrait of a government which will enact a Sunday Law just because the Sunday churches want it, due to the government fearing the way those congregations will vote.

After all, over a million protesters went to the mall in Washington, D.C., to protest taxation and Obamacare years ago - and both the government and the media acted as if it never happened...
