Dr. Shane Posted September 4, 2005 Author Posted September 4, 2005 Please provide a link or a source of information for that. I wasn't aware that Pat Robertson was praying for the Supreme Court Justice to die. I don't know why he would since Rehnquist's beliefs were so close to Robertson's. Ron Lambert Posted September 4, 2005 Posted September 4, 2005 I'm sure Neil was just being sarcastic. A lot of Democrats undoubtedly are thinking bitterly how the Republicans are getting the opportunity they wanted to appoint two justices to the Supreme Court--and get a new chief justice. It is too long until the next election for Democrats to think they can fillibuster until Bush's term is over. They are going to have to accept a major Republican victory now in the Judiciary branch as well. This is the way the game is played, according to the Constitution. And the president does have recourses if the Democratic minority attepts to block his nominees indefininately. He can hold their feet to the fire, demanding that they obey their constitutional duty to vote on his nominees. He could padlock the capitol building and not let them out until they do. He could take it to the American people and charge Democrats with treason against the Constitution they swore to uphold. He could have Republicans in the Senate get tough on the issue of fillibusters not really being allowed in the Constitution on judicial appointments--an issue that almost came to a head a couple of months ago, which was only defused when Democrats backed off and promised to allow a vote. Republicans won the right to put judges of their choosing on the Supreme Court, by winning the last two presidential elections, and by winning clear majorities in both the House and Senate. Democrats only hurt their own cause all the more by being poor losers. Quote
