The serpent asks her, Did God really say you could eat of every tree of the garden? She says: We cannot eat of it, nor touch it, lest we die. You have Eve adding a bit more to the command than what God told them. He said not to eat of that one particular tree. The Bible doesn't say anything about touching or not touching it. Look at all the rabinnical laws for Sabbath keeping and ceremonial cleanliness. Jesus was persecuted more for breaking man-made rules than for breaking God's rules (of course, He never broke God's rules). He has "disfellowshipped" from the denomination for disrespecting men rather than God. Quote

I think, since Eve made the comment in the presence of the deceiver, it reveals a part of man's psyche since the failure in the garden of Eden, when he is confronted with deceiving temptation.
