Members Don777 Posted July 11, 2013 Author Members Posted July 11, 2013 Keepers of the Faith A relative of ours, not an Adventist, attends Canada's Gospel Music Celebration in Red Deer every year. As we discussed the event, she mentioned that an Adventist group from the United States Northwest and with Hawaii connections performs each year. They are called Keepers of the Faith. Members Don777 Posted July 12, 2013 Author Members Posted July 12, 2013 The First Sabbatarian Adventist Hymnal, 1850 Quote: "Hymns for God's Peculiar People that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus." This is the title of a small collection of hymns of forty-eight pages now in the press; but will be out in a few weeks. It will contain a choice selection of hymns applicable to our faith and hope at this time. Those who have choice hymns that are appropriate to the present time, will please forward them immediately to my address; and also, send in their orders for the Hymn Book. As but a small edition will be wanted, they will come high. Price, twelve for one dollar. 12 1/2 cents single copy. James White, Part 1: The Present Truth, No. 6, December 1849, page 7. http://docs.adventistarchives.org/doc_info.asp?DocID=3964 Observations 1. There is no .pdf format for this. The link provided contains a link to the free site to download the DJVU Browser Plugin. 2. This hymnal came about five years after the Great Disappointment of 1844. 3. Imagine the house meetings during those early years and the desire to have music as part of their fellowship. 4. This early hymnal did not include any musical score; just the lyrics. 5. Note that James White led the group to consider hymns "applicable to our faith and hope" and "appropriate to the present time." 6. Adventists from the very beginning appreciated the value of music in their worship services. Related Links 1. Members Don777 Posted July 14, 2013 Author Members Posted July 14, 2013 Take 6, The Gold Standard in A Cappella Groups Australia, July, 2013 Quote: Sing Alleluia: Take 6 They are the most awarded vocal group in history, but while American sextet Take 6 can sing everything from r&b and jazz to Handel’s Messiah, their heart belongs to the golden age of gospel. In Australia for the Queensland Music Festival, Take 6 took time out to discuss their Seventh-day Adventist faith, working with Stevie Wonder & Ray Charles, and the gospel roots of their new album, One. According to the New York Times Take 6 is the gold standard for a cappella groups today. But they have been working steadily at their craft for a few years. Their origins go back to 1980 at a Seventh-day Adventist college in Alabama where Claude McKnight formed a quartet known as the Gentleman's Estate Club. When tenor Mark Kibble heard the group rehearsing in a campus bathroom, he joined in the harmonies and was on stage with them that same night. Since then they‘ve grown to be a six piece whose bedrock of Christian faith finds expression in styles ranging from jazz vocal to soul gospel, pop and r&b. Joining us this week are David Thomas, Mark Kibble, and Claude McKnight from Take 6. http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/rhythmdivine/sing-alleluia2c-take-6/4808728 Observations 1. Have any of our readers been to hear Take 6? 2. "Gold Standard" and "The Most Awarded Vocal Group in History" are pretty amazing acolades. I wonder how such success affects their faith? 3. It all started at Oakwood. Quote
