In 1940, more than half of the children had no more than an 8th grade education. I'd be willing to bet that most of the main disciplinary problems in the 1940's are very similar to the main discipline problems in K-8 public schools even now.

Would be good to see some evidence vs perception. Particularly since teen pregnancy rates have been dropping since the 70s, as just one example.

Lots of boys who would be in high school now would have been fighting a war in Europe and the Pacific a couple of years after 1940 - bet they drank some alcohol, too...

It's a fact, granted I only know what I read on the net, that there never has been a weapon of warfare fashioned that has not been used. Sometime around 1945, a couple atomic bombs were dropped, one on Nagasaki and another on Hiroshima, at which time over 160,000 people were annihilated in moments. It was about that same time that the Nazi holocaust was discovered by liberating forces of the U.S.

Despite all the pictorial evidence still in existence, there are still those who believe it was all just a fabrication by doomsday forecasters.

I understand it is also the ostrich that sticks it's head in the sand when threatened. That leaves a good target when the reality presents itself.

I also have a personal friend who has spent the last 30 years of his life teaching at a highschool in a town of 4,872. His experience of most recent conversation on the topic was 50% of his time is practicing his skills as a warden.

For some one to say that the world and people are not becoming worse morally as a whole as we get closer to the return of Jesus, is not only in opposition to what the Bible teaches, but a person has to be wearing a blind-fold not to see it.

Every thing is as it always was and nothing is getting any worse. Does that sound like God?... or does that sound like Satan?

Schools are worse and behavior is worse. My child went to the same exact school system that I did, in the same place with the same buildings and the same teachers. The differences are exactly as it is listed in LifeHisCost's post.

We never had kids on meth, we never had rapes in our school, we never had anyone carrying a gun to school, everyone had a pocket knife and there was no trouble over it. We had 1,000 kids graduate and had 1200 graduate from the same exact school 20 years later. All has changed today just as the list shows.

I know they say underage pregnancy is declining, but I see that different too. When I went to school, maybe two girls became pregnant, and it was considered very inappropriate, now they do it like its a fashion trend.

We did not have to have an armed police officer in the halls. Today they do and he actually has to make arrests often. Most kids in our local high school are on drugs and/or pills. It seems pills are the worst. It was not that way when I went; maybe 10% smoked marijuana, and everyone knew who they were.

It used to take quiet an effort for a teenage girl to take a naked photo of herself and send it throughout the whole school system and let everyone see it; and before it would happen she had a lot of time to think about it or she could even take the picture back after only a few only saw it. Not today, before she has time to really consider what she is doing, the whole nation can have it and her whole life is damaged. the same goes for things they text. I could go on all day with a million things that are worse. The drugs are worse, the people are less informed about God, Satan has better tools to work with etc.

Sure, man has always been wicked, but the acceptance of wickedness and moral decline and the ability to spread wickedness rapidly and the neglect of God has grown greatly. There is MORE wickedness, MORE wicked people, and MORE ability to spread it than ever before. It reminds me of the things the Bible says about the days before the flood.

When you people get on here and say that things are not getting worse it amazes me. You have to be living life wearing a blindfold. You don't need a government study to see it.

SINCE MORE THAN HALF OF THE PEOPLE EDUCATED IN THE 1940'S DID NOT EVEN GO TO HIGH SCHOOL, YOU CANNOT COMPARE THE PROBLEMS IN TODAY'S HIGH SCHOOLS WITH THOSE OF THE KINDERGARTEN THROUGH 8TH GRADES OF THE PAST AND REASONABLY EXPECT ME TO SEE A "DIFFERENCE".

If your friend has been working in an elementary school for the past 30 years and has noticed this extreme difference, I'd like to hear about that. But as it is, my children and my sister's and brother's children have been in these schools recently. In fact, my youngest nephew is starting Kindergarten next Thursday. My niece starts 3rd grade the same day. She hasn't told me of any rapes, pregnancies (except for the one teacher who had a baby last year), assaults, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, or robberies. But she has told me about head lice, and about a who got in trouble because they didn't stay in line.

Oh also thought I'd mention that my grandmother graduated high school (yep, she was one of the minorities who actually finished all 12 years) in 1941. She knew a fellow student who was pregnant (and who dropped out of high school); she knew plenty of boys who drank (moonshine!); and most of the boys were smoking and/chewing tobacco by the time they were 12.

My thought on this matter will open up another can of worms, but anyway, I think that that is a major reason for all the violence and drugs in high schools today: because today they are MADE go to school, where as in the earlier days only those who could afford to and/or had a desire to, continued in school. Like Cricket's grandmother, they valued their education. This is one of the reasons that private schools and church schools are somewhat better places (some are still FORCED to go there).

Today we have kids in school who would rather not even be there, and their parents could care less too, which destroys the whole learning experience and environment for those who do care. In my day, most of the trouble makers were "weeded out" by the time we made it into high school.

Some of the ones that were "weeded out" are in prison today, but some of them are doing very well, that's life. You can not successfully FORCE people to be something that they do not want to be.

You can not FORCE everyone to go to school like a prison and then expect it to not be like a prison.

Force is a strong word. I believe people often choose to attend school as they believe it to be the "lesser of two evils." Same as people who feel "forced" to pay taxes. It's really a choice between consequences (positive or negative, as the consequence may be).

They say it's a hoax, and it may be, but their charts only go back to '93 at the earliest. If they truly wanted to show it as a hoax wouldn't a comparison of the '40's, '50's, etc, be a better argument?

this thread reminds me of an incident that happened with my father, who taught at one of the toughest public high schools in Portland, Oregon...

There was a big gang-member in his class who wouldn't be quiet after Dad told him to study. Dad told him to leave the classroom, and the guy got up and said, "who's gonna make me?" Dad walked up to the kid and said, "I will." And they both started to the door. At the door, the kid turned around and made a move to hit my dad. Dad (who was an all-star wrestler and football quarterback in his high school days) put the kid in an armlock, and whispered to him that if he tried it again, he would be getting a knuckle-sandwich. That kid ended up thanking my father at graduation time, saying that Dad was the only person who ever stood up to him - and if it hadn't been for him, he probably wouldn't have had any respect whatsoever for anyone in authority. And the kid went on to college and law school, and is one of the top defense attorneys in Oregon now.

RUDYWOOF - that's a nice story - it could be a movie:) Good Job - your dad. Many teachers are not physically capable of doing that.

We had close to the same thing happen at our public high school two years ago, but the teacher ended up in a lawsuit and was forced to retire. The kid dropped out of school as soon as he turned 18 and is now in and out of jail every week. The teacher had taught for at least 30 years that I am aware of, everyone loved him, and I always think of what a shame it is that he lost his career over trying to do what was right, and it still accomplished nothing. Our whole community was in a big uproar over it.

So I guess it can go either way.

LifeHisCost - I liked your post - I don't think you tried to purposely mislead anyone - you read it, thought it was interesting, and passed it along, and regardless of whether the statistics that you presented were correct or not according to whichever side did the study, the truth is that the world is growing more corrupt daily, this includes our school systems. That I know because I can see it with my own eyes, and the Bible also tells me so.
