D.A. Wintsmith Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 I'm trying to remember the books that were in the little library in the one-room school I attended in the Green Swamp (NC). There were books from several generations, and I read nearly all of them. There were old readers from the 1930s and Reading Course Books (that's what they call them, right -- each year new books were promoted for schools to buy and read, maybe for JMV related honors?) Most of them were in a single large book case. I would grab a book and then climb to the top of the book case, and lie on the upper ledge like a cat and read it. I had a great view of the classroom and the other classes the teacher was teaching. Here are some of the titles I remember. Jungle Thorn Miracle in Borneo Nyla and the White Crocodile The Girl Next Door Hello, David City Streets and Country Roads Long Ago and Far Away Spinning Wheels All of Sam Campbell Books, my favorite was Loony Coon Alice and Jerry Books, my favorite was If I Were Going Does anyone remember more of the names of the readers? I don't know if they were SDA published or not. Please excuse if this topic exists somewhere else. I tried the Forum Search and am told I don't have permission to use it! Quote

Administrators Gail Posted August 1, 2013 Administrators Posted August 1, 2013 LOL That's funny! I grew up secular. We did get hand-me-down comic books from my cousin. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Administrators Gail Posted August 1, 2013 Administrators Posted August 1, 2013 Did you have Eric B. Hare books, or was he still in Burma when you were younger? Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
D.A. Wintsmith Posted August 4, 2013 Author Posted August 4, 2013 Oh yeah, Eric B. Hare books we had! Quote
Administrators Gail Posted August 5, 2013 Administrators Posted August 5, 2013 I love that story about old Mr. Hiss the snake that gobbled up poor disobedient Pip Pip! That just never gets old with me :) Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
M. T. Cross Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 I remember Nyla and the White Crocodile, and of course the Sam Campbell books. (Sam was not an Adventist so they probably should not have been there) Thank goodness for those books because all of my Dr. Suess books got tossed after some church members convinced my parents they were the work of Satan himself.
