Hair Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 collapsible water hose (wonderful item to use instead of a stiff, unmanageable regular water hose!) Do those things really work? I was looking at them the other day , but was scared to buy one. Most handy thing - The Bible It has all the wisdom you need. Second handiest thing - My wife Together, we can accomplish anything. Other handy things - running water, electricity, riding mower, weed eater, welding machine, a nice shop, a good plasma cutter, a TRUCK, a trailer, a nail gun, an air compressor, a level, a pocket knife... this could go on and a small hydraulic press would be nice... I gotta get me one of those. Quote

8thdaypriest Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 I've bought three of those hoses. One worked for about a week, then the hose split in two places. The other two leaked from the first use. It just will NOT sustain any pressure without leaking or bursting. NOT WORTH THE MONEY !! Quote 8thdaypriest

I can guarantee you the hose my MIL bought was not submitted to high pressure. She is on her own well, and she never has very high water pressure. Second, she bought the hose from the ads you see on TV. Quote Liberty cannot be established without morality, nor morality without faith.Alexis de Tocqueville

Lots of people at the community garden here in town have them too. Nobody I've talked to has had any issues with them... (I suppose if one was rough with the hose, it could get damaged...) joeb Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 (I suppose if one was rough with the hose, it could get damaged...) I guess an 80 year old woman tottering around her yard watering the flowers would be considered a rough user.... Dragging it over the grass would be pretty tough usage. Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted August 2, 2013 Members Posted August 2, 2013 perhaps the one she got was defective... I wouldn't summarily dismiss a product because a little old lady had an issue with it... my mom is nearly 88 yrs old and she uses hers every day....with no issues for a couple months now... Hair Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 OK! OK! I was just asking about the hose because I was thinking about buying one - lets not start fighting We have gotten completely off poor Gail's topic. Quote

(an 80-yr-old woman is living alone and "tottering"....recipe for disaster) My MIL doesn't live alone. It's enough to give me pause when 100% of even a small sample size fails. It's not only the quality of the hose gives me pause though. It's the internal diameter of the hose that bothers me too. It's so small it restricts water flow quite a bit. For several years, back when I was working, I used rubberized canvas hoses that rolled up flat in the device they came in. They took up a space of about 1.25"x14"x8" when rolled up, and they carried the same water volume as a 3/4" hose. I carried them in my work van, and they were stretched over the side of buildings, pulled across asphalt, gravel, and concrete, and generally abused quite often. I haven't worked for more than 10 years and those hoses are still functional. If and when these types of hoses are proven to have that kind of reliability I'll consider one of them. Administrators Gail Posted August 2, 2013 Author Administrators Posted August 2, 2013 Defective goods are a reality in retail. We get defective Bibles on a regular basis. joeb Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Defective goods are a reality in retail. We get defective Bibles on a regular basis. I agree. It's the number of defects per/thousand though that is part of the issue. And, it's how well a product will stand up to abuse as well as how functional it is(how much water will a hose flow), not just factory defects that is the overall indicator of quality. Take extension cords for example. There's a huge difference in quality between good one and a poor one. The good one will stand up to years of use/abuse by a professional contractor. A poor one will fail within a short time, as well as not be able to carry the same amount of current, lose flexibility when it gets cold, fail if driven over, kink, the outside covering will abrade/fail, etc.... I have an extension cord that I used for work for more than a decade and it looks the same today as it did the day I bought it, and I bought it used. Who knows how old it is, and it's still flexible in cold weather, tough(no nicks in it), and carrries 30 amps. (I've owned it for more than 20 years.) I'm just not sold on these new hoses is all. They have to be around for a few years to prove their reliability. It takes more than a TV ad to sell me on something.
