A SOUTH African man has saved his pet dog before his wife when their yacht was shipwrecked.

Graham and Sheryl Anley and their Jack Russell terrier Rosie ran aground off one of South Africa’s most dangerous stretches of ocean, at Cebe on the Transkei coast. They battled waves of up to seven metres and were swept onto a reef.

National Sea Rescue Institute North London station commander Georff McGregor said all three were wearing life jackets. The dog Rosie was wearing a specially tailored dog life-jacket with an emergency strobe light.

"As the incident happened Graham sent a Mayday radio distress call and activated the EPIRB (Global Positioning Distress beacon) but they were immediately forced to abandon ship," said Mr McGregor.

"He first swam Rosie ashore safely before returning for his wife, whose safety line had snagged on the steering gear," said Mr McGregor.

Once all three were safely on shore, Mr Anley - who is also a sea rescue volunteer - used his mobile phone to raise the alarm. Rosie and Sheryl Anley were airlifted to the East London sea rescue base, IOL News reports.

It would make sense if the wife was a fairly good swimmer, she could be oriented enough to take care of her self, at least long enough for being rescued. The dog would not have the cognitive ability and easier to loose.

Have never been on a yacht but somehow this doesn't sound the safest to me..

In any event I would love to hear his response

I'm just guessing here, but since they all had life jackets on then they probably left the wreck about the same time, Hubby had the dog and when they reached shore, he realized that his wife got hung up and then went back to untangle her. Had she not got tangled up she probably would have made it shore on her own, which was probably the game plan to begin with.

That is possible. But I think I would rather have my husband my husband checked my safety before he takes off for shore with the dog.

I love my pets but they are a distant second to my husband, kids and grandkids.

Don't think I would put the safety of a dog before a human being

Amen, Bonnie. Humans are made in the image of God, and animals only share in the breath of life.

I am gonna guess that she likely insisted that he get little Rosie to shore before her.

The story does not say that he did not check on her first. I picture myself in this situation to check if the humans are doing alright, then if they can remain as they are for a while get the dog safe, and then come back and help the other people.

If you took note the first thing I said was "I would like to hear his reasoning" There may be more to the story that is not reported and the only clue you have is ......

It would be interesting to hear his reasoning. For me,I would want to hear he checked on his wife and knew no harm could come to her by taking his dog to safety first. Being tangled in a yacht that had to be abandoned does not sound like the safest place to be.

A man saved his dog before his wife after their yacht ran aground Sunday off the coast of South Africa.

Realizing he could not save his wife and his beloved 9-year-old Jack Russell Terrier named Rosie simultaneously, Graham Anley decided to rescue his four-legged companion first, swimming the dog to the shore before returning to the shipwreck to assist his wife.

"He first swam Rosie ashore safely before returning for his wife," National Sea Rescue Institute North London station commander Geoff McGregor said in a statement.

"As the incident happened Graham sent a Mayday radio distress call and activated the EPIRB (a GPS beacon) but they were immediately forced to abandon ship," McGregor added.

All three were wearing life jackets at the time, with Rosie wearing a specially tailored dog life jacket that had its own emergency strobe light attached, according to South Africa's News 24.

While Anley was in the process of bringing his dog ashore, his wife Cheryl's safety line got caught on the steering gear, preventing her from swimming to shore by herself, according to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI).

Graham Anley is a longtime volunteer for the NSRI and said it was "humbling to have the shoe on the other foot and need to be rescued."

Once ashore, the couple was rescued by an EMS helicopter and taken to the NSRI's East London Sea Rescue base, according to McGregor.

The couple’s yacht, called "The Boundless," was severely damaged in the wreck.

"Efforts will be made by the couple to arrange to salvage what they can of their yacht," McGregor added.

The couple has not responded to media inquiries, requesting that all questions be fielded by the NSRI.
