Moderators Jeannieb43 Posted February 5, 2003 Moderators Posted February 5, 2003 Dr. Raymond F. Cottrell (D.Div.) died January 12, 2003. His memorial service was held in the Yucaipa California church on February 1, 2003. He was one of the editors of the original SDA Bible Commentary, back in the 1950s. He was a true Biblical scholar. He spoke in January 2002 at the SDA Forum meeting (San Diego Chapter) on the conflict in our church over the sanctuary doctrine. He stated he felt our church owes a huge apology to Desmond Ford for the treatment he received at Glacier View. [Many current theologians have come to agree with Desmond Ford's views on the sanctuary doctrine, after much study. IMHO, there should be allowances for differences of interpretation in that area, without removing a minister's license because of it.] Quote Jeannie

...Change is inevitable; growth is optional....

Moderators Jeannieb43 Posted February 7, 2003 Author Moderators Posted February 7, 2003 Liketowrite, You're entitled to your view. I respect that. The thing I've come to realize, as I've grown older and hopefully more mature [having grown up in the SDA church, attending church schools through college], is that God's creating mankind with freedom of choice is one of His main, overriding principles. The character of God EQUALS freedom of thought and belief. He has never forced belief upon any of His children. Even God Himself lost a third of his own family during the war in heaven, exactly because they were exercising their freedom of choice. --And these were perfect, sinless angels, who chose against Him! And reading the synoptic gospels, one finds interesting differences in the details there portrayed. They don't all agree with each other. They saw/heard/understood things differently from each other. So can we do any less? Can't we allow for differences among the brethren, based upon their individual understanding of what they've studied in the original languages? We as fallible human beings are not in a position to sit in judgment on another person's sincere belief system. Desmond Ford deserved nothing less. If he is wrong, that decision will be made plain in the end. If our denominational bureaucracy be in error, that too will be made plain soon enough. I LOVE our message. But sometimes the messengers -- being human -- have erred. God still loves them. And you. And me. Quote Jeannie

...Change is inevitable; growth is optional....
benherndon Posted March 8, 2003 Posted March 8, 2003 Dr Cottrell was a fine intellectully honest gentleman scholar who loved the Lord and this church regardless of it's problems. The same can be said for Dr. Ford. Most of the latter's critics are ignorant of what he has said and written as well as the intricate circumstances of how and why he was 'defrocked'. Present company may be the exception but the basic truth remains. Dr. Ford is a Sabbatarian and a defender of EGW against the charges of plagiarism. He is not perfect--but who is? His critics? Read 1 Cor 11 again. Faith, hope and love--but, the greatest is love....for God AND for man! Congrats to Jeannieb43.....and, Amen. Quote
liketowrite Posted March 8, 2003 Posted March 8, 2003 While Ford had and has many fone qualities this does not make him Biblically correct. I have found it intersting from the prespective on one who was around before he was defrocked the revisionist views that keep getting promotted these days as fact about Dr. Ford often from those who are not aware of the facts. A number of people both inside the church and people who are outside of the organizationa nd critcal of it, including Robert Brimsmead, have questioned Ford's Sabbath view because Sabbath keeping is not logically consistent with his other views on the law. As far as being supportive of the SOP - well I think you need to look at what he has said and not just what you may have read. Ford has had a tendancy to speak more freely than he writes. As to the question of liberty in the church. I fully suport everyone's right to hold what ever personal view they wish. They are entitled to uphold whatever their personal standards of behavior are. They are not entitled to undermine the basic doctrines of this church. They can point out any new light they have and if the church agrees then they can promote it. Liberty should be unlimited in areas of personal interputation. I do not expect that any must see things my way and I expect the same liberty from others. How far from home? TC Quote
