BobRyan Posted September 7, 2013 Posted September 7, 2013 The place of the Bible in public schools has been debated since the 1963 Supreme Court ruling in the consolidated cases of Abington School District v. Schempp and Murray v. Curlett. http://www.beliefnet.com/Faiths/Gallerie..._term=yahoo.com Sadly the Catholics were so loused up on this subject that they opposed the Bible. But they need not have done it since the protestant Bible is merely a subset of the Catholic Bible. It would be just as nonsensical as Protestants whining in the streets because the school children were reading from the book of Psalms. in Christ, Bob Quote John 8:32 - The Truth will make you free“The righteousness of Christ will not cover one cherished sin." Hmm... I wonder if that same thing could be said just of the denomination. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
CoAspen Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 What is the most interesting about such movements or concerns is that somehow people think the schools are to be responsible for everything! I see such arguements, in the present and the past, as telling us about the lack of parental guidance, not only in reliegious concerns, but in other areas as well. Yes, it is a shortsighted view of train them in school and then all will be well in society while forgetting all of the ways people treat each other with religious training. Always that finger pointing outward forgetting what the finger is attached to!! Quote
Administrators Gail Posted September 9, 2013 Administrators Posted September 9, 2013 Some of that may have due to government's convincing of America's parents that kids NEED to be in school, that the government has the responsibility of educating the country's children. Homeschoolers think differently, that it is the right and obligation of parents to choose their children's education. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
CoAspen Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Well, I do believe the government, whom I pay taxes to, local, state and national, should be wanting to see children educated. They, the children, are our future. They can't just rely on 'home schools' and hope everyone gets educated. Certainly there is room for both when there is a proper curriculum. I don't believe that Americans can blame the government for their own lack of being involved in the 'home training' that every parent should be doing. Schools can not be the guidance system for religious morals, values, etc. That is the role of the parent. Public school is for the secular side of training. Quote
Aliensanctuary Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 It's been a great loss to our nation by the removal of Biblical teachings and/or principles. Those principles tend to protect citizens from each other, but crime replaces the void left by the absence of these beneficial guidelines for human behavior. Our government is shooting itself, and us, in the foot, by removing opportunities to teach and encourage citizens to respect each other's property and lives, the essence of the teachings of Christ. Without this basic respect of others, we'll just have to build more, and bigger, prisons and cemeteries, and endure more and more corruption of those in power in government and corporations. CoAspen Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 PROOF!! Show me a nation who now or in the past that used the Bible as a primary tool for life that produced a better society! Your suggestion is that Bible only can teach people to have 'basic respect' for others, so prove that statement with facts...if you don't mind! Quote
M. T. Cross Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 Seems to me that if the Bible is needed to teach people basic respect, dignity and compassion there is a much bigger issue... Though really that brings my back to my point in another thread, that you can learn these basic ideas from almost any spiritual text and any religion. As for the Bible being in schools? Why not? As long as they include all other known religious and cultural mythology as well. Quote
Aliensanctuary Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 I suppose teaching respect for others is more of a parenting function, but lacking that, the teaching of religion's basic "do no harm to yourself or others, and, anti-selfishness principles" in schools would be better than nothing. LifeHiscost Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 Quote: As long as they include all other known religious and cultural mythology as well. Since we are probably speaking of the U.S., and a pluralistic society, which Bible should we consider? The Koran, the Morman bible, The New World Translation, or perhaps the books of the some millions of gods of India. God cares! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
nuff sed Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 I think that when the 'false revival' gets rolling we will see the Bible back in the public schools. Nuff Sed Quote
