Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted September 9, 2013 Moderators Posted September 9, 2013 Did you know, September is National Yoga Month? September is also the national month for a number of other causes. How many can you name? NOTE: Wikkepedia will not give you the correct answer. Quote Gregory
Members phkrause Posted September 9, 2013 Members Posted September 9, 2013 Not sure if this is a cause or not, but yesterday was "Grandparents Day.":) Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted September 10, 2013 Author Moderators Posted September 10, 2013 Someone sent me a list of more than a dozen days that were alleged to be national days in September. I was amazed. I checked it out. I found that were even more. And, National Yoga Day? I would never have dreamed of such. It is true. Quote Gregory
Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted September 10, 2013 Author Moderators Posted September 10, 2013 I have lost track of the Wickipedia site that lists a dozen or so September days and events. Quote Gregory

Moderators Gerr Posted September 11, 2013 Moderators Posted September 11, 2013 My wife went to a yoga class some years back. It freaked her out when they started chanting some mantra which she found out later had something to do with one of the Hindu gods. Quote

It freaked her out when they started chanting some mantra which she found out later had something to do with one of the Hindu gods. I hate when that happens....It's like you do some activity that you like, [say Judo] and you are all involved in it, [learning the throws, and some nice philosophys of how to avoid fighting], and then you learn about some minor related activity that is a big deal for you [bowing to each other and bowing to the picture of some dead guy whom you are required to pay homage to before you practice]........... That is very very common in yoga, and a Christian should avoid it altogether. g Quote "Please don't feed the drama queens.."
Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted September 11, 2013 Administrators Posted September 11, 2013 What if one does Yoga listening to soft hymn music and/or praying silently to Jesus? CoAspen Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 ...and some people do it strictly for the exersize/stretching...which is good for the body!! Quote
olger Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 What if one does Yoga listening to soft hymn music and/or praying silently to Jesus? Tom. What fellowship has light with darkness? You answer that, and I will answer your question. G Quote "Please don't feed the drama queens.."
CoAspen Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 Understand your comment, makes sense..but the question has been raised that yoga is 'wrong' for the christian. So....can someone enlighten us on why this form of exercise is bad for the body? If exercise is good for the body, than we have always said it also increases the helath of the mind. Do christians go off the 'deep end' when they declare something 'wrong' because one can also take that 'something' in the wrong direction? I do remember a group of very pious individuals that carried the idea, guarding against all apparent/possible evil, to an extreme with out beneficial results. Oh, wait, we already have a thread about doing just that!!! Quote

It is of primary importance what you do. So, chanting the mantra is worship, regardless of beleif. 2) Most Yoga that claims to be exercise rather than religion has enbeded in it classic aspects of Hindu worship. 3) It should be noted that Yoga is a sect of the Hindu religion, just as Methodists are a sect of Protestantism. Members phkrause Posted September 11, 2013 Members Posted September 11, 2013 Excellent quotes Tom, from very Christ like people. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Ted Oplinger Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 It would seem that yoga would fall into the area occupied by foods dedicated to idols. Was this practice part of pagan worship? Without a doubt. But Paul counseled this: if one knew the pagan gods were not gods, and relegated such dedication as nonsense, food was food to them. They were to eat freely with no worries. However, if they were in the presence of one weak in the faith, who had not yet made that strong connection - then they were to refrain from eating, so that they would not cause their weaker brother to fall - up to the point of not allowing the weaker's weakness to dictate to the conscious (aka, the weak in faith were expected to learn better through the strength of the stronger at some point in the game). Likewise yoga. Is it part of pagan worship? Without a doubt. Can the exercise and meditation techniques be taken out of the pagan context, and put into a Christian one? In the eyes of some, yes. Is there any danger in meditation centered on God, versus that centered on one's self-centered focal point? That would be the discussion point. To the weaker one looking on, could they tell the difference without inquiring? Probably not. Quote "As iron sharpens iron, so also does one man sharpen another" - Proverbs 27:17 "The offense of the cross is that the cross is a confession of human frailty and sin and of inability to do any good thing. To take the cross of Christ means to depend solely on Him for everything, and this is the abasement of all human pride. Men love to fancy themselves independent. But let the cross be preached, let it be made known that in man dwells no good thing and that all must be received as a gift, and straightway someone is offended." Ellet J. Waggoner, The Glad Tidings "Courage is being scared to death - and saddling up anyway" - John Wayne "The person who pays an ounce of principle for a pound of popularity gets badly cheated" - Ronald Reagan
