My daughter is an excellent nurse BUT she left nursing 14 years ago in order to raise her daughter who is now in her freshman year of High School.. She wanted to get back to work in order to start saving for eventual expenses in a Seventh-day Adventist Academy and college.

The problem was that all her resumes sent by email were rejected by the computer without a human being ever laying eyes on them.... because of that 14 yr. gap.

FINALLY.... a friend got her an interview for part-time work with a Homecare group and she was hired. She did it for about six months growing more and more frustrated by the day because of it being so disorganized.... which SHE is not! She was almost at the end of her rope and had already drafted her resignation when a church member friend of hers got her an interview with Baptist Hospital for their pool which supplies temp. nurses for their system. She was finally hired and after Orientation start

ed last week on the job being part of a team to give flu shots to the 1400 employees of the institution. The innoculations come in three or four types. Injection,subcutaneos (sp.) and nasal mist. She was reading the instructions on the various packages and noted that 'live vaccine (nasal mist) was contra-indicated if the person worked with live animals. Her orders never mentioned it but she decided that because they were going to one of the labs where they worked with monkeys that the Nasal Mist could not be used....so she decided to not even take it to the site. All went well as she explained it to one and all...except one person threw a fit and refused injection.. The 'powers that be' came to see what all the fuss was about. She was escorted in to the chief administrator to explain why she had not brought the mist.. After the explanation the Administrator asked point blank, "Who made the decision to not bring the vaccine?" She looked him straight in the eye and said, "I did'... He picked up the phone and made several calls. Then he said to her, "You did exactly right. WE missed That these last years." The upshot of it all is that the Nurses Orders are being revised to reflect what she uncovered. She thanks the Lord for pointing it out to her. I hope that now they realize that they have a conscientious nurse who is not afraid to make decisions and 'carry through'.. no matter how long she has been out of the work force. Hopefully this might open some doors for her in the future.. Nuff Sed

Nuff Sed, I liked the whole post you wrote, but most of all for the principle expressed in the actions of the individual who spoke out re: the contraindications she knew to be true.

While we cannot suppose to second guess others in their sense of following conscience, we can reveal our own convictions and become one of the innocent parties not culpable when damage is caused because no one was willing to voice themselves when those in control are held as having more wisdom as a result of their position.

Many lives have been lost as a result of yielding to voices that appeared coming from superior wisdom, not the least from a democracy, once similar to the U.S., whose first name was Adolf. I'm sure there are others in more recent history, that could be named.

Why is the nasal mist contra-indicated for persons who work with live animals?

Hi Crick, It's been awhile.....I think that the Nasal Mist vaccination involves live virus whereas the others do not... They have to be careful that the virus does not 'jump to an animal' and then start multiplying with the possibility of starting an epidemic. I shall have to discuss this with my daughter to be sure that I have my facts correct. Nuff Sed...

I found out yesterday that my daughter did not read the warning about not using the Nasal Mist Vaccine for people who worked with animals as I had thought. She had heard the warning during orientation for her new job and it stuck in her mind. The lab where she was giving the vaccines then found it listed in their protocols as a serious issue. The interesting thing is that the one who raised all the fuss was one of their own Vets. After it was all over my daughter asked her supervisor, "Am I going to be classed as a trouble-maker?" The supervisor smiled and said, "I love troublemakers!"...Nuff Sed
