Cable TV

Why no cable/satellite? Not worth the money.

We spend so very, very little time watching television. Even if cable/satellite were free, I think we'd forego the installation simply because it's too much trouble to go through for the anticipated results.

First box of choices needs to have just plain satellite, i.e., DirectTV or Dish. We don't have "Cable". We do have Direct TV. We don't have or listen to 3ABN or any other religious programs, TV, radio (Adventist or otherwise). All 'religion time' is spent exclusively in the Bible.

The cable and satellite companies are moving toward elimination of the linear network and going to all On Demand. The larger companies like Comcast, Time Warner and Charter are on a shopping spree to buy up the content providers so that they will own the distribution rights.

VOD (Video on Demand) has been so popular where available because the consumers can get what they want when they want it. John Sie, CEO of Starz Encore group predicts that by 2020 the linear network will be obsolete.

It will be interesting to see how the religious networks change to try fitting into this new model. I'm predicting that whoever gets in first with HDTV product with some sort of built in advertising platform that the cable operators can make a little money off of will become the long term leader in the niche.

When I was a child, I remember some long Sabbath afternoons waiting for the sun to go down. Since we have SkyAngel, that doesn't happen in our home.

Of course not all the programming on SkyAngel is appropriate for the Sabbath but enough of it is to make the afternoon a pleasent time to spend with the family watching and discussing the programming. Combine that with the traditional Sabbath board games, outdoor activities and AY and Sabbath ends too quick.

Since SkyAngel has added FOXNews, H&GTV, Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel we get more than enough secular, family programming and really feel no need for cable or Direct TV.

I have basic cable which allows me to view all 5 local stations and a few channels of local access. Local access is stuff like community college courses, churches running their services. 4H shows etc. The only reason I have cable is because I also have DSL from the same company and they give a reduced rate if you have more than one service. Since I need my net access for work and DSL so I can download my paperwork faster I went with both and pay less.
