ClubV12 Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 Polynesian “wayfinders” (Hawaiians among them) as early as 500 A.D., or earlier, were navigating quite well around the seas. When European discovers began to think about this, some 10,000 islands most of which were inhabited, they were quite perplexed HOW they could have done it. Stars, driftwood, clouds, seaweed, winds, birds, weather, the smell, taste and temperature of the ocean, interference patterns on the sea surface, all were employed. Oh, and one other technique, their testicles placed on the deck of the boat. They were able to sense the ocean swells. There is a large swell, for instance, that comes from New Zealand. Knowing the direction of that swell, or others, was an important navigation aid. Quote
