Ok, the answer is yes. Acronym is an acronym. It stands for

"A coded rendition of name yealding meaning. Ala "SNAFU" and "FUBAR" it is a military term. Over time acronym became a word in its own right. Now when we say NASA, we are really using a coded rendition of name yealding meaning (acronym) for National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

Hmmm, I think that may have been reverse engineered, though: made up to fit the word 'acronym', which has another etymology:

acros + onoma in Greek

A.C.R.O.N.Y.M. is definitely an acronym! Don't let Bravus fool you!

Now, here's another question: what is the proper term for a word that actually is, what it describes? For example(s): "ACRONYM", "word", and "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz" (yes, this last one is a word--Big Bird told me so!).
