In my genealogical research I came across this list of reasons for which people were admitted into insane asylums.. Oddly (or perhaps, not so oddly), "religious enthusiasm" and "political excitement" were among the reasons....

lol...wouldn't Facebook and C/A be quiet if those were still applicable today?

If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony.

Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?

I would love to know what some of those actually meant. Such as "fighting fire", what did they mean by that?

I hope they mean anybody going to great extremes!

Taking almost anything to extremes would mean people need help, although not necessarily admission into an insane asylum.

O.K. Sexual abuse is acceptable as long as it is not excessive! :)

The Trans Allegany Asylum is one of the most interesting historical sites to see in W Virginia. Needless to say ghost stories abound ... architecturally it is quite interesting.

According to the list of reasons to be admitted most of my friends could be my fellow roommates. LOL

The reason I had found the list was because I was researching the lives of my ancestors and their siblings and descendants. One of my 2nd cousins 2x removed showed up on a census as a patient in the "Southwestern Lunatic Asylum" in Virginia. He must have died there, as there's no further information on him again. Kinda makes me wonder what happened to him - why he was there.

All I know about him is that he was always single, was a farmer, and lived with his parents until their deaths - they both died the same year within 2 months of each other. Perhaps he was "slow" and when the parents died, there was no one able to take care of him - his brothers and sisters had mostly moved west from Virginia. Or perhaps he just fell apart after his parents died.

...just one of my unknown family mysteries that I'll probably never solve...
