OzarkWoman Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 if you are one of those people who have, 1] depression,or bipolar problems, and you smoke , there is evidence that smoking causes some forms of depressions or bipolar problems.... So, kick the habit and cure the depression....but bipolar isn't able to be cured...but it can ease the mood swings... Just an FYI from the observations of your government health department.... In fact, did you know that 50% of the current sales of cigarettes are to mental health patients....true fact. LOLOLOLOLOLOL And they know this, HOW???? I have seen ridiculous things from the libs but they are so out of hand these days. Quote
LifeHiscost Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Quote: As I understand the research, it is thought that with one specific type of mental illness, the person uses tobacco as a medicine to provide relief. Not to change the subject but I just finished watching a documentary re: what banks from America were complicit in providing funds for Nazi Germany during time of war, bringing me to the conclusion that nothing can be proven by research except that where the money is, the research will find good reason to justify the figures to make it necessarily logical. That sure has a ring to it that life is not always going to be smooth sailing. I EXPECT to find conflict (don't go looking for it), have been and will be confused (left or right, job, home, friends, Church) and thwarted (just when I thought the plan was coming together). And sometimes, it all leads to feeling discouraged, to say the least. Slowly I am learning what peace, joy, love really mean. Restin Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 The whole topic of mental/emotional problems among SDA is in a deplorable state, not just in my opinion. Just because EGW had somewhat to say about some erroneous practices in her day, the church throws the baby out with the bathwater...that is, until one of their own family, or their own self, has serious symptoms. SDA hospitals have excellent psych wards, but it's almost like an underground until you need to know for some emergency that comes to you. There are many good therapists and they don't do hypnotism and hocus-pocus. Psychiatry is a serious science, not just somebody's pep talk. Seeking professional help for emotional disorders is no more a denial of faith than having a doctor for a heart condition. God can always work a miracle healing if He chooses to, but usually He works through the medical ministry of good hospitals and therapists, and some kinds of medicines where indicated. Quote
Members phkrause Posted October 25, 2013 Author Members Posted October 25, 2013 GP, not aimed at anyone, so please no one take offense. We moved back to MA to become the foster parents to our two grandchildren. Both have problems. The older one was born early and spent about a week+ in the Nic quene unit, and has a number of issues, which I will not get into. The younger child was also born early, not as early as the first one, and also spent time in Nic quene unit, maybe even longer than the first one. The younger one has a foot issue, not sure what the condition is called. My wife having been a nurse her whole life, checks everything out to see how we can help the kids. What she has found out, is that the one common denoninator(sp) is smoking cigarettes. I thought that was very interesting, but not surprising. Anyway thought I'd post this, considering there's been a little talk on here about smoking. Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted October 26, 2013 Moderators Posted October 26, 2013 In my response here, I am going back to the 1st post. Mental illness in the U.S. is generally classified by a periodic publication known as the Diagnostic & Statistical Manual (DSM). NOTE: In the world, which includes the U.S. mental Illness is a part of a larger classification known ICDM. The DSM is published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA). It is founded on the best of research. In 2011 the APA published a 277 page book entitled: RELIGIOUS AND SPIRITUAL ISSUES IN PSYCHIATRIC DIAGNOSIS: A RESEARCH AGENDA FOR THE DSM-V. The first 30 pages of this book are devoted to the religious and spiritual issues associated with depression. It would be of value to those of you interested in this subject to read this section. Some of the pages contain more references to the Bible than you will find in a typical Adventist sermon (other pages do not). The point of all of this is that the secular world is coming to see the value in consideration of religious and spiritual values in the treatment of mental illness. Here is just one such statement which comes from page 29: Quote: Treatments that have combined traditional psychological treatments such as cognitive-behavioral therapy with religious content and pastoral care were found to be better in improving and maintaining that improvement in depression than those using psychological therapy alone (Mueller et al. 2001) There is much more. Even in the darkest hour, you can STILL have peace as you learn to truly trust in Him. And I've also found that if I show more than a little bit of confidence in what Jesus is willing to accomplish for and through me, a thorn in the flesh is always forthcoming to help me realize just Who is responsible for all of the goodness that might be prevailing in my experiences. If I wanted to boast, I would be no fool in doing so, because I would be telling the truth. But I won’t do it, because I don’t want anyone to give me credit beyond what they can see in my life or hear in my message, even though I have received such wonderful revelations from God. So to keep me from becoming proud, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from Satan to torment me and keep me from becoming proud. Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. 2 Corinthians 12:6-9 NLT God cares! Quote Lift Jesus up!!

That may be where and who He usually works, but the question is, is that God's best choice or man's unwillingness to trust God with anything more than minor intervention that makes it necessary to function without His prevailing presence in our lives? Or possibly even man's neglect in following the guidelines God has revealed in the Word for good health? God cares! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
