Thanks - I think in the end the conclusion I came to is that the find is there, and it's real, but its importance and potential had been over-stated and its discovery is at a very preliminary stage. Certainly it would be nice economically for Australia, even if environmentally pretty disastrous.

There's a fairly strong anti-fracking movement in Australia that might impede it, but on the other hand Coober Pedy is pretty remote - only reason there's anything there at all is the opal mines.
