[:"brown"] [/] One in five people will be affected by suicide at one point or another. Even if you don't think it will happen to you or your family, you should be aware of the signals and what to do. The Adventist Review has published this special edition. In my opinion, it should be required reading in every Adventist school, church and hospital. ~Chrys[/]

Depression and suicide are a growing problem in today's harried and hurried

world. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, suicide is the

eighth leading cause of death among men. In 2001, more than 30,000 persons took

their own lives. Many observers say there's a strong link between suicide and

depression. As the holiday season starts in the next few weeks, the Adventist

Review presents several articles to help Christians respond this pervasive

problem.

When I was in college we had a family that attended our church. The husband had attended a Revelation Seminar and become convinced of the truth and the wife came to try and unconvince him of the truth. She was Assemby of God and it made for interesting Sabbath School classes.

Anyway they had a 13 year old daughter in my youth class. She was always kind of shy. The couldn't afford to send her to summer camp so some of us anonimously pitched in money to pay her way. I got tied up in the hispanic work shortly after that and lost touch with her but discovered a couple of years later that she committed suicide when she was 15. I wasn't even that close to her but having been her teacher I still started to ask myself "what if" questions. It is very sad when someone can't see the hope that Jesus offers each of us.

I am aware of several young people that I went to (Adventist) high school with who have taken their own lives.

Sometimes I wonder whether our belief that death is a painless sleep, and that those who are lost are dead forever (rather than being tortured in hell forever), makes it easier for troubled Adventists to contemplate suicide than would be the case for other Christian believers.

Just a thought...

For me it was an easier thought. But then I thought, well it will be my last act and and act of defiance against the world and God. How would I then be judged? I felt compelled to fight for God and heaven.
