Johann Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 TOM AND GREGORY both of these are good posts about members and churches dgrimm60 Why? Quote
Johann Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 i did not have the question directed to me, but we do not have a pastor and this is why i am thankful. we all feel the burden and responsibility to serve and see that everything is done, planning, speakers programs, outreach, members needs. if we had a pastor we would feel we had someone else who was going to take care of it all. this way everyone's spiritual gift is needed and everyone is needed, and counted on, and those who have the gifts to lead lead and organize, provide hospitality, prayer support, groups organized and conducted, members needs attended to. This way every gift is brought into action. A hundred years ago SDA pastors were primarily evangelists, so churches were left to take care of themselves. Quote

Moderators LynnDel Posted January 23, 2014 Moderators Posted January 23, 2014 My experience with pastors has been very mixed, but I always like to give them the benefit of any doubt, and when there is a question, it is better to talk with them personally -- if they will let you -- than to make assumptions. I've been a member in some churches where the gap between pastors was a much happier and spiritually active time for the church than when the new pastor came on board. My current pastor is young, gives great sermons, has good social skills, and has a sense of goal and mission, one of the best pastors I've had. I drive 30 miles to attend that church. It is worth it to hear good sermons and to be part of an active church, but I would much rather be a member of a church closer to me so that I could be more involved. Quote LD

JoeMo Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 I concur with Debbym. Without a pastor, a church body is forced to make a decision - disband or pull together. A close and functional church body will pull together, organize, and work according to their gifts. Over time, people will naturally rise to the positions for which they are gifted (at least that's what has happened in the 2 churches I am involved with). I'm thankful to be part of an active, self-governing church body. It seems to be working OK. In response to Greg's comment about raising the smell of hell in people's minds, if that is the burden of a particular pastor, he should go for it. If a pastor's burden is to proclaim the love, goodness, kindness, grace and mercy that Jesus offers, he should feel free to go for it as well. It would be interesting to see which pastor had the healthier and bigger church after a year or two. Quote

OzarkWoman Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 Why do you think a pastor would email a half-a**** apology and ask forgiveness at 11:40pm a Friday night? Why the email? Why can't he do it in person, or at the very least over the telephone? The answer is that he didn't mean a thing and it was nothing but a prop to be used in front of the ones who showed up for the business meeting. All of that so he could say that he tried with me after he read my statement, nothing but a show. I think it is disgusting that a pastor would be more worried about he looked in the eyes of a congregation than to do the right thing. This same pastor sent me a text one morning to tell me that he lifted me up in prayer. This pastor is a Pharisee and nothing else. The Bible says to not stand on street corners to pray in public but to do it in the privacy of your closet. This pastor is a phony and it makes me sick to know that the conference would allow this to happen. This is a lay-pastor. Quote
Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted January 27, 2014 Moderators Posted January 27, 2014 Ozark Woman: You asked Why. I am going to take a stab at responding to it. You come across to me as a very powerful person. I note that you have a lay-person as a pastor. It occurs to me that your lay-pastor may be scared of you. As I say, you present yourself to me as a very powerful person. NOTE: I am not defending that lay-pastor. I am not critical of you. I am simply making an observation in response to your question, which I took to be a honest question. Quote Gregory
OzarkWoman Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 All I can say he is a terrible pastor, but no matter because as of yesterday, I am no longer a member of the SDA denomination. He goes out of his way to make himself look good instead of just doing good. He does lie and has been caught in said lies. I may be powerful, in your eyes, but all I have ever done is to point out to him when he has lied and hurt me. I think it is sad that we had to lose the original pastor that baptized me. We ended up having some issues all because of this new pastor, but we worked through them all when everyone just left us alone. Do you feel it is proper for a pastor to make a big deal about lifting someone up in prayer, only to use that later down the road to prove how supposed righteous he is? Quote

OW, please take this as a very gentle question... if it doesn't matter and you're no longer involved with that particular person (the lay pastor), why keep massaging the issue? It sounds like you want it to be over and done with, but then it seems like that person has become somewhat of a fixation. (I'm not saying you're wrong - or right - in your estimation of him.... I just think you'd be happier focusing elsewhere..) Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?

Woody Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 It's easy to be discouraged over the actions of one individual. But to let the actions of one individual color your experience for the entire church - is wrong. One perspective presented is that OW is a powerful person. But doing this makes her look very weak. So - I am not sure which perspective is correct. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.

I think it is disgusting that a pastor would be more worried about he looked in the eyes of a congregation than to do the right thing. "You may think you can condemn such people, but you are just as bad, and you have no excuse! When you say they are wicked and should be punished, you are condemning yourself, for you who judge others do these very same things." Romans 2:2 NLT "And do you think or imagine, O man, when you judge and condemn those who practice such things and yet do them yourself, that you will escape God’s judgment and elude His sentence and adverse verdict?"Romans 2:3 AMP When I came to realize that there are only three categories (lust of flesh, pride of life, lust of eye)of sinful conduct to fit all of mankind's failures, I came to realize it wasn't very healthy (spiritually speaking) for me to sit in judgment on those that have weaknesses I find difficulty dealing with. "Love bears up under anything and everything that comes, is ever ready to believe the best of every person, "1 Corinthians 13:7 AMP God's advice can appear too difficult to maintain but habit makes it a lot easier. "But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded."James 4:6-8 NASB Of course God always gives me free choice to brush off His instruction and stick to my path with whatever the consequence might develop, on my own. I manage my frustrations with this promise in mind. "Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”" Hebrews 13:5 NKJV God saves! Jesus cares! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
OzarkWoman Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 OK, got the drift finally. It is ok for some in here to talk about pastors and people they don't even know but not not me when I know the man and the situation. No problem. Now, just remove my membership from here. This is the last SDA related anything that I have to have my membership deleted. I expect it to be done. Quote
