Repentance is no more a meritorious work than its counterpart, faith. It is an inward response. Genuine repentance pleads with the Lord to forgive and deliver from the burden of sin and the fear of judgment and hell. It is the attitude of the publican who, fearful of even looking toward heaven, smote his breast and cried, "God, be merciful to me, the sinner!" (Luke 18:13). Repentance is not merely behavior reform. But because true repentance involves a change of heart and purpose, it inevitably results in a change of behavior.

Like faith, repentance has intellectual, emotional, and volitional ramifications. Berkhof describes the intellectual element of repentance as "a change of view, a recognition of sin as involving personal guilt, defilement, and helplessness." The emotional element is "a change of feeling, manifesting itself in sorrow for sin committed against a holy God." The volitional element is "a change of purpose, an inward turning away from sin, and a disposition to seek pardon and cleansing." (Berkhof, Systematic Theology, 486) Each of those three elements is deficient apart from the others. Repentance is a response of the total person; therefore some speak of it as total surrender.

BTW: Having an endorsement from Phylis Tickle is reason enough to suspect that the endorsee is not only helping people out of the box, but out of the Book, as well!

God's spirit is pleading with everyone everywhere, and we cannot judge.

Jesus hung out with people that fell in a more extreme social category in His day then this woman and her audience today.

I love how God is not a respecter of person's or of religion, or of personal style or lack of it. I love how God's Spirit is speaking to every person everywhere.

Even though some have muffled the voice and refuse to hear, God still speaks, His eternal word still resonates throughout the entire universe.

God is seeking the lost however profound our personal reactions to appearance, and theologies. we really cannot judge anyone's relationship to Jesus.

makes me think of when the disciples came to Jesus and complained about another group that was preaching about Jesus, and Jesus did not forbid them.

and it highlights how we so easily exalt the reactions of our flesh, our pride, our arrogance, our superiority.... and not the humility and service and outreach of the Spirit to all without regard to any of these things.

reminds me of those two "crazy" missionaries Jesus sent out.... they had been cutting themselves and had scabby scarred arms, and wild hair, and they didn't stop telling people throughout the land how Jesus had saved them from madness, and how the pigs rushed over the cliff when they were delivered.

and thousands of people learned about Jesus in a land that otherwise was closed to Him and his properly dressed disciples.

When Jesus came back many were ready to listen and gave their lives to Him.
