Last night at AY, the leader was talking about not eating pork. Then he said, "the pig is made up of three different animals, the rat, the cat and the dog." My jaw hit the floor, and I spoke up and said that I had never heard such a thing; but then the pastor backed him up saying that it was so.

Has anyone here ever heard that before? If so, where do/did you find the evidence for this?

The quick answer is that the response is garbage. But a more detailed response gives a different answer.

Recent genetic studies have shown that all animal life forms share genetic structure with other forms of animal life. A copy of National Geographic (I forget the date.) had a major article on this. In this article it pointed out the genetic structure that human life shares with other animal life forms. As I recall, the pig was one of the animals that it also listed.

What does it mean? Not a lot.

The two pastors probably told a partial truth, but were well beyond their competence level in making a statement like that.

It stands for Adventist Youth, it's like a Vespers program to close the Sabbath, and is geared for the younger members of the congregation, but all are invited to attend.

If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony.

Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?

That reminds me of a recent scientist that said we came from chimps and pigs :/

A wild herd of blind turtles might be glad to see this :~)

I understand bananas share 50% genetic code of humans. Or is that the other way around? giggle

Weird. Creationists believe animals are just the way God created them.

Suggesting that pigs share genes with (not even sure what 'made from' would mean in this context) other living species is pretty much evidence for evolution... or, yes, for a common DNA design template used by a Creator.

Either way, I'm not sure this kind of 'guilt by association' is really a good argument for not eating pork.

There are much better ones:

- pigs are omnivores that eat anything, including meat, leading to biomagnification of harmful substances in the environment

- pig farming for food is typically not either environmentally responsible or kind to the pigs

- vegetarianism is much more defensible on energy grounds: 7 pounds of vegetable matter for each pound of pork - better to eat the veggies

And so on.

Truth is important
