Stan Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 No need to confuse being rude, tacky and conservative. I know many people that are very conservative, and they are not rude, tacky, judgemental or demeaning to people. They do not give snide remarks and are pleasant to be around. Those who have said conservatives have a tough time here, are using conservativeness for an excuse to be rude and mean. Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted January 10, 2014 Administrators Posted January 10, 2014 Well said! As I have said a number of times before, many, maybe most, of my friends and family are conservative. We get along just fine because of the very thing you have stated. Quote "Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good." "Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal." "I love God only as much as the person I love the least." *Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth. (And finally, the ideas expressed above are solely my person views and not that of any organization with which I am associated.)
Members phkrause Posted January 10, 2014 Members Posted January 10, 2014 Tom the way I see it is like this: what does it mean to be conservative or liberal? As some have said its about spending money!! Yes there are some that are conservative in that respect, but to me it doesn't translate that that person is conservative. I say that because some that claim to be conservative and go around making rude comments, etc., they are not conservative at all, only in there own mind. To me if someone wants to claim conservatism, than they should be conservative in all fasets(sp) of there lives, because I know so-called "liberals" that are more conservative than a few on this forum who claim to be conservative. Moderators Kevin H Posted January 10, 2014 Moderators Posted January 10, 2014 I try not to be mean, but sometimes wake up the next morning and feel that the post I wrote at the end of a long day at work was meaner than it should have been and I want to apologize when this happens Quote
Administrators Gail Posted January 10, 2014 Administrators Posted January 10, 2014 Thank you, Kevin, for saying that. A remorseful realisation is better than a proud attitude that never gives in. We appreciate that. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
JamesOrlando Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Well there's really 2 different ways of using the word conservative. The 1st, is to mean conservative to the scriptures. The 2nd, is to mean traditional in church culture and lifestyle. Unfortunately, many people act as though the 2nd achieves the 1st, and it does not. For example it may be traditional to wear a business suit to church, sing hymns from the hymnal, and not swim on Sabbath. But these are not scripturally conservative. Another person may wear jeans, sing contemporary Christian songs, and swim on the Sabbath (but not go shopping, eat out, or anything that breaks the rules). This is not conservative to traditional culture of our church pioneers, but it is still conservative to the scripture. When a person actually walks of the flesh and not of the spirit, against the scriptures - eating at a restaurant on Sabbath, uses bad language, has a bedroom relationship before marriage; then this is liberal behavior. So one can be both contemporary and conservative. The thing to watch is a poor judgement of liberality. I have found that rudeness generally comes in more abundance from those who are traditionally conservative but scripturally not conservative. In galatians 5 we learn that a true Christian walks with the spirit, and that path should never lead to judgment but only helping to point people towards Christ through your own example reflecting His, and their own observance and commitment to it which must come from them. M. T. Cross Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I can never understand why people can't just be people. Ya know, endeavor to be a good person, treat others with respect and dignity as often as possible, and try to remember that each one of us has our own issues and path that brought us to where we are at in our lives. Why there has to be so much labeling going on baffles me. Quote

There are honest, decent, moral conservatives and liberals. There are rude, bad behaving and immoral conservatives and liberals. A liberal outlook does not equal loose morals. Liberal/conservative are unhelpful labels and really do not describe polar opposites anyway. That is largely because they are relative terms that mean very different things to different people. And those self identified in one group or the other tend to see the other in a negative light and use the other term as a pejorative and their own as a compliment. A better distinction is conservative/progressive. Quote "Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good." "Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal." JamesOrlando Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 why cant people just be good? indeed. Why cant people just all be perfect sinless Christians? As paul commands, why cant people just have love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Those are all labels and they all have a vice. We all have labels and we all have sin and unfortunately ideology is not reality. That is why we need Jesus. Quote
JamesOrlando Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 perhaps youre right. Liberal could mean to liberate the truth and does not necessarily imply straying from the truth. But you got my point...that disrespectful behavior is not the same as a contemporary style. Rudeness is disrespectful and not biblical even if it does come from a traditional elder in a business suit. Quote
LifeHiscost Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Quote: why cant people just be good? indeed. I would suggest mainly it's a result of believing we can work out our own salvation without the aid of a Savior. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us."1 John 1:9-10 NASB It's not easy for me to tell someone their dirty when I'm aware that I'm just as dirty, though my dirt may be of a different color. ChildofChrist Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Just tagging on... I grew up being 'liberal'!! I actually spoke with and made friends with the 'different' kids in school. Children of color! Children from obviously economically disadvantaged (and it showed) or the lonely. I dared to go against the popular grain of the school environment that I was in. When my peers asked an opinion, I'd just smile and ask something stupid like, "What do you think?" Why? I was afraid that they would ask why I thought that way and think me 'stupid' when I couldn't come up with a reason on the spot. I was VERY good at playing conservative. Perhaps I still suffer from my self-doubts and fears to a large degree; but then I don't engage in debates so I don't have to worry about 'reasons'. Given time, I can come up with a reason for my faith and beliefs...whether they be of a spiritual nature or just life in general. Quote Wakan Tanka Kici Un ~~Child of Christ~~
