Johann Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 This is the first time I "see" this Leonard Sweet. What do you think of his presentation? Quote
Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted January 12, 2014 Members Posted January 12, 2014 I think he makes an excellent point... Maybe too many people *do* "search the Scriptures" for an answer, when the Answer is standing there in front of them. Maybe that's how some people can be Christians without ever seeing a Bible. The Bible points to Christ, not the other way around. It's CHRISTianity, not SCRIPTURanity... Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?
Administrators debbym Posted January 13, 2014 Administrators Posted January 13, 2014 Leonard sweet is charismatic. he is compelling in his persuasion. Left brained individuals will likely not be comfortable with his appeals however reasonable. He is persuasive on a nonverbal level. he is unafraid to be passionate about his faith. He may be intellectually gifted. Right brained intellectuals are seldom valued by left brained people. someone will likely stand up or want to stand up and say, he has zeal but is it according to knowledge? Messiah's, or those to claim to be messiah's can also have much charisma. some people are more vulnerable to charisma then others. He used characteristic" (no pun intended) sda lingo when he said, "put on the character of Christ". few are talking about this. Quote deb Love awakens love. Let God be true and every man a liar.
Johann Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Is it right or wrong to consider the adoption of certain ideas in our church work which "originate" with people who are members of a different denomination? Could we get ideas of how to reach secular people in the 21st century? Adventists got many doctrines from other churches, including the seventh-day sabbath. Have we now learned everything there is to know? Are we still open to learn anything more? Quote

Have we now learned everything there is to know? Are we still open to learn anything more? 1. Christ came for all, He speaks to everyone. 2. One can always learn, if they choose, so if it works else where why not check it out and see what might be a good. 3. I think there is a 'hunker down' mentality among a wide number of people and we have been taught that the SDA church has the truth and only truth will come from it. So...many find it difficult to 'listen' to none SDA's Our believe that we have all the truth or that it comes from us is a stumbling block, the same as it was for the Jews of Christs day. Quote

LifeHiscost Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Quote: we have been taught that the SDA church has the truth and only truth will come from it. Can't say that has been my experience. On the other hand I know of no other denomination that teaches the investigative judgment. Since it is written that when Jesus returns the second time, He will be bringing His rewards with Him, it only seems logical to assume those who are going to be rewarded will already have been investigated for the purpose of determining what their reward will be. All who are washed in the blood of Jesus will receive the gift of life, but the rewards are different based upon the works that have been carried out in the lives of those who will be saved or lost. "It’s not important who does the planting, or who does the watering. What’s important is that God makes the seed grow. The one who plants and the one who waters work together with the same purpose. And both will be rewarded for their own hard work. For we are both God’s workers. And you are God’s field. You are God’s building." 1 Corinthians 3:7-9 NLT God blesses! Jesus saves! Johann Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 We do have unique doctrines that are not taught by any other church? Are they the most important ones? Quote
Johann Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 That was not my question. Are the unique doctrines we hold in all cases the most important? What about justification? Forgiveness? Sabbath? Second coming of Christ? None of these doctrines are completely unique to the SDA church, are they? Quote

Jesus cares! but we cannot do with the very person of Jesus what we do with scripture. scripture is not Jesus, unless made alive by the presence of God. scripture is written language produced through inspired human beings human beings, a communication that can be taken and construed to mean anything. it is God's presence that makes something Holy. People can and people do hold scripture without the presence of God. the devil himself can take the scripture and pour over it, and hold it, and speak it, and believe it is true, and not love and cherish Jesus. Patrick Lawrence Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Thing about the emergent church movement is its a mix of good and bad things. About things that sound good but the Devil is in the details as they say etc. I would say be very very carefull with listening to Leonard Sweet. As I side note it is interesting he is at George Fox University http://www.georgefox.edu/seminary/programs/dmin-sfs/fac_staff.html where a lot of our Adventist pastors are now going. George Fox University seems to be a center of the emergent church movement. And in turn one of its strongest influences on our church from the emergent church movement. Quote http://UROBI.com/
Johann Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 I do not know Leonard Sweet, so I looked and found these "dangerous" statements of his: Quote: Viral: How Social Networking Is Poised to Ignite RevivalThe gospel is nothing without relationship. And no one gets it like the Google Generation. God came to earth to invite us, personally, into a relationship. And while Christians at times downplay relationships, the social-media generation is completely sold on the idea. In Viral, Leonard Sweet says Christians need to learn about connecting with others from the experts—those who can’t seem to stop texting, IM-ing, tweeting, and updating their Facebook statuses. What would happen, he asks, if Christians devoted less attention to strategies and statistics and paid more attention to pursuing relationships? The current generation is driven by a God-given desire to know others and to be known by others. Most of them, in seeking to connect in meaningful ways, have found a place of belonging that is outside the organized church. Why not bring the two together? Those who are sold out to relationships can teach Christians how to be better friends to people who need God. At the same time, members of the social-media generation can learn how to follow their desire for belonging, straight into the arms of God. It’s time for relationship to be restored to the heart of the gospel. And when that happens, can revival be far behind? http://www.leonardsweet.com/ Quote: The Many followed Jesus to hear and be healed. The Few followed Jesus to trust and obey...
