Who are you?

The first line of the bio that I send to anywhere that needs one - book and paper publishers, conference organisers, everyone - is "David Geelan is Sue's husband and Cassie and Alex's Dad." Only after that does it get into all my professional stuff. That's the one sentence statement of my identity. Right or wrong, that one even comes before "David Geelan is a Seventh-day Adventist Christian." It *definitely* comes before "David Geelan is a liberal leftist"!

So who are you? If you have to define yourself in one simple sentence (no subclauses!), what does that sentence say?

Well I have a brother who has traveled even more than I and has been published more than I, has done more seminars than I, and as a result many people know him. I also have missionary parents and grandparents. On top of that my brother and I look alike so people will often say "Oh you must be ______ sibling." or "You must be the child of _______."

Now a-days my identity goes something like this "Hi my name is _____ and I am the teen mission trip coordinator...."

But Shane.....I am still my kid's parent and my spouses spouse....lol

I am, and always have been a person who is realated to someone. Kit's daughter, David & Joel's Mom,

Allan's wife, Deb's Mom, Mom to any and all of the foster children we've had, and now, Ben's mom (he's the one that is, and will require, the most work!) But the one that I most treasure is "a child of God."

My Identity is the software that contained within my brain. It is my person, my life, my soul, my mind, my knowing, my thought, my consciousness and my memory. When I died, I lost all these attributions. When I am resurrected, I regained all the attributions that I had before.

A body change does not change my identity. I may be transplanted with a new hand, a new eye, a new kidney, a new liver, a new lung or even a new heart but my identity will remain unchanged.

There is a science fiction story about Jack and Jill. As the story goes, there were a group of neuron surgeons relaxing themselves at the foot of a hill resort. Jack and Jill decided to climb up the hill. While they were half way up, suddenly there was an earthquake. Rocks from the top of the hill began to fall down. One tiny rock hit Jack on the head so hard that it penetrate into the centre of his brain. His brain was fatally damage. Other bigger rocks fatally damaged Jill's whole body except her brain. The surgeons quickly transplant Jill's brain to Jack. Jill was buried and Jack was in deep coma in the intensive care unit in the hospital. Jack's mother came to watch him every day for months. Then one day Jack opened his eyes and his mother was so delighted. "How are you Jack?" his mother asked. Jack paused for a long while and then said "I am not Jack, I am Jill." All Jack could remember was that she is Jill. Jill's indentity was inplanted on Jack's head.
