Moderators Jeannieb43 Posted January 24, 2014 Moderators Posted January 24, 2014 M.T., this is a comment about your blog. Do you live near Penticton, B.C.? From the description of your community it sounds to me a little bit like Penticton. I had a friend who grew up there [many years ago -- before you were born, in fact], and later on when I traveled through B.C. in our motor home with our family, we camped at an RV camp in Penticton overnight. I liked that town and always remembered my friend's descriptions of it. Quote Jeannie

...Change is inevitable; growth is optional....
M. T. Cross Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 I live in Grand Forks which is about 2 hours east of Penticton. My sister lives there though, and I used to spend a lot of time there in the summer when I was a teenager. Great place, tons of great memories. Quote

Moderators LynnDel Posted January 25, 2014 Moderators Posted January 25, 2014 Marmite makes really good gravy: Heat 3 Tbs oil (I use olive) with 3 Tbs flour in a sauce pan until bubbly. Add 2 cups water and bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. While you are waiting add one packet Golden George Washington broth and about 1 tsp Marmite. I don't measure the Marmite; I just put in enough to make the gravy about the color I like it. Good stuff. Watch out, or it will suddenly boil over! Quote LD

I've been looking for one myself as the recipes found in the grocery store, while I like the taste of the country gravy, are pretty heavy on pepper and they are a little costly for daily use. Moderators lazarus Posted January 28, 2014 Moderators Posted January 28, 2014 Marmite makes really good gravy: You must be an amazing cook (or a gifted chemist). I'm not sure how Marmite can be added to anything and it turn out to be good. Quote Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. I remember as a kid trying Marmite on all kinds of things. I liked shape and color of the jar so I'll really tired but to no avail. We have a jar in the cupboard right now. I still like the look of it, but the taste..... Quote Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. Moderators LynnDel Posted January 28, 2014 Moderators Posted January 28, 2014 I am not a Marmite purist. I like it as a flavoring, not by itself. Add some to cream cheese for a good cracker spread. If you mix it so that it looks the color of peanut butter, it tastes delicious and potentially gives your guests, who are expecting peanut butter, a real taste surprise. Quote LD
Moderators lazarus Posted January 28, 2014 Moderators Posted January 28, 2014 Add some to cream cheese for a good cracker spread. I'll try the cream cheese but I'm rather skeptical. Moderators Jeannieb43 Posted January 28, 2014 Moderators Posted January 28, 2014 I've never seen or used Marmite. But from LynnDel's recipes it sounds something like Vegex. Is it better than Vegex? Quote Jeannie

...Change is inevitable; growth is optional....
Moderators LynnDel Posted January 28, 2014 Moderators Posted January 28, 2014 I haven't had access to Vegex for an eternity. But the way I use it - in gravy - I can't tell the difference. Marmite, Savorex, Vegemite, Vegex - interchangeable in my recipe. Right now Marmite is a better deal on Amazon. Quote LD
fccool Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Seems like a blasphemous question, but what the heck is Marmite? Yes, I could google it, but I want your explanation, because it seems to be in a epicenter of world-ending event for some people here :) Quote

Moderators LynnDel Posted January 29, 2014 Moderators Posted January 29, 2014 Marmite and all its relatives are dark brown and salty, something like a boullion cube in paste form. Some use it on bread, crackers, and corn on the cob. My dad tells a story of when he was in London and visited a packaging plant there. They were packing Marmite or one of its relatives, and he asked what the difference was between that and another kind. Sorry I don't remember which kind. The man pointed to the barrel and told him both kinds came out if the same barrel. Quote LD
