Shirley Temple, RIP

Shirley Temple, who rose to fame as arguably one of the most famous child actresses in Hollywood history, has died, according to her publicist. She was 85.

I don't think I saw her until she appeared on TV. We never saw any movies back then, except those shown at JMV gatherings.

In the mid-1970s I happened to sit next to Shirley Temple Black on a PSA flight from Burbank to San Francisco. I didn't recognize her, but soon I noticed several other passengers were passing pieces of paper to her from behind us and beside us, along with ballpoint pens, and asking for her autograph. Then I took a good look at her and realized who she was. I exclaimed in a loud whisper, "Oh, I know who you are!" She responded by "shushing" me with her fingers to her lips.

She was a quiet person. We did have some good conversations, however, en route to SFO. I told her I appreciated her work as Ambassador, and she seemed to like that. I didn't even ask for her autograph, since I felt she'd been bothered by too many such requests already.
