Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted April 5, 2014 Members Posted April 5, 2014 I just read the FDA's news release on the upcoming availability of naloxone (Narcon) as a non-prescription single-dose kit. FDA press release "Evzio" is the brand name, and anyone will be able to buy it, and keep it on hand in the medicine cabinet. Police units in several states will be keeping the kits available for emergencies when they encounter possible OD's. The use would be to counteract overdoses of heroin, morphine and other opioids. Here's the question: is this a good idea? Some of my Facebook friends are upset about it, as they figure someone who OD's on heroin "deserves what they get" since they chose to take the drug....and that the immediate availability of an antidote would just create a merry-go-round of increasing drug abuse. My concern is for the kids who experiment and unwittingly OD, as well as for the depressed person who tries to commit suicide via an OD. thoughts and comments? Guest Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 Maybe Narcon is better than Heroin, and they would just go straight for that instead. ) Quote

Administrators Gail Posted April 5, 2014 Administrators Posted April 5, 2014 I think that anything that saves lives is a good thing. If it was your loved one that was ODing, would you hesitate to use it? Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted April 5, 2014 Author Members Posted April 5, 2014 that was my thought, too, Gail... but some feel it is enabling addictive behavior..
