What is the difference between polygamy and adultery. See Deuteronomy 21:15...

People were to be stoned for adultery but not polygamy?

with polygamy, nobody is stepping out on the spouse(s)... adultery is defiantly cheating on the spouse...

it has a lot to do with respect..

If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony.

Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?

Adultery is based in selfishness and polygamy is based in insanity.

Not sure it can be found in the scripture, other than the rib being taken from Adam and the instruction they were then to be one(hence no others in the union), but in adultery the principle of coveting anothers' spouse has been ignored, a totally self serving action whereas in polygamy the added wives are each taken care of, at least materially by the polygamous person.

Solomon had seven hundred wives (1 Kings 11:3). Was Solomon insane?

Many would say so!

Polygamy, while not according to God's plan Scripturally, was condoned in ancient times. Perhaps the reason for that was that it provided care for women who had been widowed or bereft of family to care for them. With men frequently dying in battle I imagine there were many widows and orphans. Maybe that is why the prophets and the Bible speak so often about their care.

Biblically I find only condemnation for adultery.

At least in Bible times each wife had her own tent... I don't know that this happens with instances of modern polygamy.

Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

Along with 300 concubines.

I would say that yes, he was insane.

With so many dead men during WW2, polygamy would have been ok?

Somehow I don't think it would work in our general culture ...

Adultery in the Bible involved extramarital relations between a man and a married woman. If the woman was not married nor betrothed to another, it was not adultery. David committed adultery as he coveted the wife of another. He did not commit adultery as he added additional unmarried women to his collection of wives. Esther did not commit adultery as she was not married when she got married to the King.

God never said "Thou shalt not think".

adultery in human relations is used to represent the unfaithfulness of God's people to their God.

adultery is about being unfaithful to your mate.

polygamy is about about males being committed to more than one female.

interesting that reverse polygamy didn't appear. that is one woman being committed to involvement with many males.

oh i understand in ways, the male ego and distributions of property by males, and women being considered as property and males the true citizen.... blah blah blah...

Yes: what we're talking about is 'polygyny' - one man with multiple wives. For a number of reasons, 'polyandry' - one wife with multiple husbands - is much rarer and often not talked about.

Polygyny can also be about power and acquisitiveness, in a culture in which men had all the economic power: many wives were ornaments to the household like many servants or a large house, showing the man's financial ability to support them. If we look at the ways and places polygyny is practised today, later wives are often taken under age and have little choice in the matter. In Bible times, the marriages would have been arranged. No doubt there were some happy wives and some sad ones, some kind husbands and some cruel.

It would be very unusual for a polygynous marriage to be any sort of equal partnership: which is one of the things I like best about my monogamous marriage!

Also very important in Biblical times was lineage for inheritance purposes. When inheritance was through the male line, it would have been a bit difficult for a son born to a woman with multiple husbands to know which one was the father of that son to determine his inheritance.

"Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good."

"Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal."

"I love God only as much as the person I love the least."

*Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth.

(And finally, the ideas expressed above are solely my person views and not that of any organization with which I am associated.)
