You Can Thank the Department of Education for This…

May 29, 2014 By Matthew Burke

Jesse Watters

The Department of Education was created by former President Jimmy Carter in 1979, giving federal bureaucrats a pathway to control of what was previously the greatest educational system in the world.

And is it working, despite the billions (and growing) of taxpayer money being sucked out of the economy?

This week, FOX News’ Jesse Watters interviewed college-age youth at Jones Beach in Wantagh, NY, to ask some very basic history questions that every American should know.

Watters asked the scantily dressed beachgoers questions like, “Who did America fight in the Revolutionary War,” and “Who won the Cold War,” and “What was the Civil War about?”

The answers are hilarious in an uncomfortable and disturbing sort of way. You can thank the Department of Education for the answers.

You and only you are responsible for every decision and choice you make, period ... ... Wish more people would realize this.

I happened to see this episode of "Watters World" and the students Watters' interviewed were so ignorant of our history it was pathetic. This isn't the first episode that Watters has done that exposes the total ignorance of our current crop of college students about their own country either.

When complete generations of citizens are ignorant of the history of their own country and the form of government that the founders of that country put in place, and why they put it in place, that country is in deep trouble. How can a person be patriotic, love their country, or even know what it stands for when there is that level of ignorance?

It is almost funny in a sad way. It isn't just history tho.My husband and I will run to Taco Bell's for a quick lunch from time to time. We have sat behind a young person applying for a job and listened to the responses to questions asked during the interview.

They come in with their pants almost around their thighs and more pierced body parts than you can count. They slouch way down in the booth like they are going to take a nap.

Then the fractured english really finishes them off.

It is a steady stream of "Man,like you know" Dude I need a job, like it has to be quick so I can buy......

Many times as they leave the interviewer is rolling her eyes and shaking her head.

What a contrast to the polite nicely dressed young person that

can speak a coherent sentence.

My grandson is going into 4th grade. He knows what the

constitution is and has read some of the federalist papers.None of that was provided by the school

that really *was* pathetic... there ought to be a high school graduation requirement consisting of the same questions on the test that immigrants need to answer in order to become citizens.

Thank a doctor when you get sick because of smoking, too. Because it totally makes sense to blame the people who are trying to fight the epidemic for the effects of the actions of the people causing the epidemic. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. If young people actively choose ignorance (often ably modelled for them by their elders), why blame those working hard to educate them?

In the interest of accuracy you may want to go back and reread.

It states "The Dept of Education",not teachers. There are ineffective teachers, teachers that really don 't care, but I think they are in the minority. Teachers do not set the standards or curriculum. The standards define expectations.

Many public school teachers send their own children to private schools. Why do you suppose that would be?

It was not the teachers that set the standards to allow graduating students three attempts to pass final math exam. Failing three times is proof the exam is to hard and they pass.

Being asked the questions referred to in the article the same way would have been a guaranteed failure, not a diploma.

There have always been parents that were not concerned about the education of their children and that does make it tough on students and teachers alike. But students that are barely literate were not being handed diploma's

I hardly think that the above description indicates that a valid survey was done.

If I were to stick a microphone in the face of scantily dressed young people of that age on a beach, I would expect some crazy answers from youth who were simply having fun with me.

There isn't any claim to a valid survey as far as I can tell.

Nor do I think the manner of dress is any indication of what has or has not learned in school

Students receiving a high school diploma should be able to enter college with the knowledge required

http://www.highereducation.org/reports/college_readiness/gap.shtml

Every year in the United States, nearly 60% of first-year college students discover that, despite being fully eligible to attend college, they are not ready for postsecondary studies. After enrolling, these students learn that they must take remedial courses in English or mathematics, which do not earn college credits. This gap between college eligibility and college readiness has attracted much attention in the last decade, yet it persists unabated. While access to college remains a major challenge, states have been much more successful in getting students into college than in providing them with the knowledge and skills needed to complete certificates or degrees. Increasingly, it appears that states or postsecondary institutions may be enrolling students under false pretenses. Even those students who have done everything they were told to do to prepare for college find, often after they arrive, that their new institution has deemed them unprepared. Their high school diploma, college-preparatory curriculum, and high school exit examination scores did not ensure college readiness.

Good point Bravus! We look for what we want and ignore the positive. i would say that teachers are always doing their best to teach, it is the audience that makes the decision to learn or not!

It would have been a good point had the title said

I really don't think that education is teacher's or state's job. The reason why I got my education is largely due to hard work of my parents to teach me to learn beyond the curriculum.

I think it should be commonly understood by all parents that schools merely supply kids with fundamentals. I finished my freshman college requirements when I was a junior in high school... free of charge. There are plenty of opportunities for kids who want to learn. I think it's largely a parental failure, and not states.

I find it ironic that you would put blame on the state, given your views and ideal about opportunities that states do create. It's not a failure to teach that has kids retaking math tests three times. It's largely a failure of the parents to be adequately involved in their kids education.

Not sure what this is supposed to mean....given your views and ideal about opportunities that states do create. Pointing out what is available doesn't mean that availability is my ideal.

Neither the parents or students set the standards so low that accepts three failures and then "Oh well,It was to hard anyway".

Of course parents play a important role.Never claimed otherwise. But the minimum standards set is not in their hands.

Diploma's are not handed out by parents. If a minimum knowledge on any given subject is not met,no diploma.
