It's stories such as these that bother me a LOT. It's as if being SDA will somehow protect one from disasters. I don't believe that for a second. God's Ten Commandments are a wall of safety about His people. keep the commandments and there is safety in the arms of Jesus. Choose not to obey them and take your chances. Lets face it Adventists die in plane crashes too. Outside of Collegedale TN the conference plane went down a few years ago and several conference officials including the conference president died in the crash. The copilot (sitting in the seat beside the dead pilot) walked away from the crash without a scratch. In the days of the pioneers, going to Australia from America meant getting on a boat and traveling months (Sunday through Sabbath). But in this day, a flight around the world may take a few hours and Sabbath travel on commercial aircraft is not always necessary. That being the case, why would an SDA choose to travel on Sabbath if it were not necessary? Quote His child Henry Bible student/Author https://www.loudcry101.com
Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted July 28, 2014 Members Posted July 28, 2014 sure, if one feels it is wrong to travel on the Sabbath, by all means, don't do it... but I don't think Flight 17 went down because it was flying on the Sabbath - which is essentially what the article was implying. (by the way, why isn't it wrong to use a computer and be on the internet on the Sabbath? The companies who keep the internet open don't go on vacation one day a week...people are working... and keeping us connected. And then why is it wrong to use a washing machine on the Sabbath? The machine does the work. It's a machine, not a member of the household, unless one considers that a service plan is "insurance" for a family member.) Sojourner Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 so God decided that the people who were traveling on Flight 17 should be allowed to be killed because they were traveling on the Sabbath???? It's stories such as these that bother me a LOT. It's as if being SDA will somehow protect one from disasters. I don't believe that for a second. I have to agree with you there Rudywoofs, the same scenario was rolled out after Sep 11 where several Christians were on sick leave or not at work for another reason on that day and some people were keen to point out that they were clearly spared because God favoured them and so forth. Yet thousands of other just as much born again Christians died also who were clearly not spared by God. It is my suggestion that the above scenario represents Calvinism and his whole theology based around how God has some type of “elect” group of people that are saved. Westboro Baptist Church seem to promote this idea a lot about how they also are a part of the Elect and specially protected by God as a result. If the Armenian teachings of Ellen White are to be understood, then its accepted that Free Will allows both Salvation to anyone and also the existence of choice to people to do evil heinous acts like Sep 11, or shooting down passenger planes in the Ukraine. Whilst it may be hard to accept, we either accept the teaching on Free Will or we don’t. Quote

From the Orthodox Jew's perspective pushing the button to get an elevator to come to the floor and thus take you to another floor would be wrong. They solve the problem by setting the elevators to constantly go up and down on the Sabbath and stop at every floor. The Jews solved the problem by automation. The internet is automated, but what is the reason for going online on the Sabbath? To the glory of God or to conduct business? God can keep planes from crashing. And he can keep His people safe when they do crash. But if the Sabbath is treated like any common work day now, when the Mark of the Beast is the law of the land, Christians that treat the Sabbath like a common work day at that time will receive the Mark of the Beast. Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted July 28, 2014 Members Posted July 28, 2014 the internet does not run by itself... people are working on the Sabbath to keep the internet available. But you seem to be saying it's okay to use the internet and computers (or other mechanized devices), as long they somehow connect (in some straight or convoluted way) to God's glory.. That reminds me of "Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." 1 Cor 10:31 It seems to me that what a person *does* and is *acceptable* on the Sabbath is well within one's own personal inclinations. But I realize there are many who will disagree with me about this... Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. hch Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 the internet does not run by itself... people are working on the Sabbath to keep the internet available. When I worked with a company that had its own servers, they were all automated. So I have no point of reference to confirm your assertion. Is the comparison apples to apples or apples to violets? I do not know. Keeping the Sabbath is a question that speaks volumes about us to God. On Sabbath: An Orthodox Jew will not turn on or off a light switch. Turn up or down the thermostat on a hot or cold day. Drive a car to church. Thus the Orthodox would not be on a plane on Sabbath whether it crashed or not. As for the rest of us: what do we understand about Sabbath keeping? And how do we live in the parameters of our understanding? Quote His child Henry Bible student/Author https://www.loudcry101.com

Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted August 3, 2014 Moderators Posted August 3, 2014 Quote: How does that theory fit into lighting a match on Sabbath?Or pressing a button for an elevator? There are some people who simply do not understand the Jewish religion. Everything that they think they know they have read--generally from 2nd & 3rd hand sources, which may be Christian. They may not know anyone who is Jewish. They certainly do not know a Rabbi. Quote Gregory
Aliensanctuary Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 Since Sabbath observance here on Earth, imperfect as it is, points us to the real Sabbath in the Kingdom, we can expect that at that time those who can will rest, while those who maintain the city and the Temple will rest another day. Whether one sweats or not while playing Sabbath Rules Basketball seems to be the splitting of hairs and is part of the process of creating numerous rules and regulations to govern Sabbath observance.
