Moderators Bravus Posted November 13, 2005 Moderators Posted November 13, 2005 Slightly less facetiously: the Greek 'agora' is similar in some ways to the Roman 'forum', although it means 'marketplace'. We could consider this forum a marketplace of ideas. In the Roman forum, it was essentially about hearing all speakers and people were swayed by the arguments. Sometimes, of course, the ideal form of the forum wasn't quite lived out. Julius Caesar was raised in the slums (the Subura) despite his patrician birth, and later on when he needed to advance his interests he hired gangs of tough guys from the slums to stand around in the fora and intimidate his opponents. When the forum degenerated into a fistfight, most Romans felt it had failed of its main purpose - the open exchange of ideas, and the ability for orators to persuade listeners of their views. In an on-line forum, the traditional 'trivium' (three roads) of logic, rhetoric and grammar remains important to persuasion. Logic is often further divided to include 'dialectic' - the to-and-fro of ideas between opposing viewpoints - which also seems to be an important skill for online fora. Some of Cicero's and others' polemical speeches are scathing, but we got the term 'ad hominem' from the Romans, and attacking the orator rather than the argument was generally seen as the desparate tactic of a losing position: not so much evil as just gauche. Thankfully this forum of ours doesn't have to legislate. And with a little luck and a lot of goodwill, it can be more about the arguments and less about the (metaphorical, linguistic) Subura toughs. Fran Posted November 14, 2005 Posted November 14, 2005 Stan; Quote: The greatest want of the world is the want of men--men who will not be bought or sold, men who in their inmost souls are true and honest, men who do not fear to call sin by its right name, men whose conscience is as true to duty as the needle to the pole, men who will stand for the right though the heavens fall. {Ed 57.3 This is what it is all about! Neil D Posted November 14, 2005 Posted November 14, 2005 Quote: I for one would like to see you give your in-depth analysis to real existence reasons for a Seventh-day Adventist online Forum. Having been asked, I am a bit reluctant to put forth my ideas. A bit embarrassing, and intimatading. Too many of Julius Cesears intimadators among the spectators in this crowd. And being one of slow wit [my assesment, not someone else's], I find that searching for words to adiquately convey my thoughts some what difficult. Quote: This is what it is all about! So come Lord, Jesus! I find this thought somewhat misleading to the EGW quote. "To find men..." is not to just find them AND FOLLOW. Rather, it is to find these qualities within one self and display them. It is to physcially show those qualities that we hold so dear to our hearts and to give them a voice. These qualities that our own souls would love to touch and emulate, and finding them within ourselves, steele the resolve within us. IMO, it is within these forums that we find our weakness, and the weakness of others. It is within these forums that we can practice what we truely seek. It is within these forum that the nebulous weakenesses of our humanity can find the begining of thier manifestations and be pointed out and exposed for what they truely are. Peter thought that swords would help with thier rebellion against Rome...But Jesus knew of a different rebellion, one that Rome would not war against without suffering sever hemorages within thier own ranks. Every man looks within himself and finds weakness. Every man desires to be a more ideal person. Every man sees that ideal in Christ. That is what these forums are for... Moderators Bravus Posted November 14, 2005 Moderators Posted November 14, 2005 Thanks for your kind words, Stan - I have to say, it's nice to find a community where I can waffle on about Caesar and not only avoid being laughed at but actually b encouraged! <img src="/ubbtreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> And it goes without saying that this place is made as supportive as it is by the Boss Bear.
