LifeHiscost Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 Did Jesus drink wine that was alcoholic, or was it simply unfermented grape juice? Fermentation is symbolic of the presence of sin, the antithesis of the perfect character of Jesus. Hebrews 4:15 ... For we have not a high priest who cannot be touched with the feeling of our weaknesses; but was in all points tempted like we are, yet without sin. ...Hebrews 4 Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message. 17Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them. John 13 Hence my belief He would not imbibe in any case, with a fermented beverage, at the least because of giving a poor example . God is Love! Jesus saves! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
Gustave Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 Did Jesus commemorate the cleansing of the Temple by attending Hanukkah in the Gospel of John? ...Of course He did - as would have any observant Jew who had it within their means to do so. Psalm 104, 14 Does grape juice make you giddy? Quote

Psalm 104, 14 Does grape juice make you giddy? 14He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth; 15And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man's heart. Psalms 104 NLT, KJV Considering the harmful affects alcohol has on the brain, the symbolism of fermentation to indicate the presence of sin, and the undisputed misery caused as a result of those who have abused alcoholic beverages, I find it easier to Accept the text as above. JoeMo Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 Can't say for sure that Jesus drank alcoholic wine, but He made a bunch of it at Cana for everyone else to drink. And the other guests were already intoxicated at the time. Quote

joeb Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 Did Jesus drink wine that was alcoholic, or was it simply unfermented grape juice? The drink that the Roman soldier gave Christ on the cross, a sour wine called gall, was fermented. He refused it. Why? I believe it was because He didn't want anything to dull His senses, even when suffering unbelievable agony. So if He would'nt take a fermented drink on the cross, why would He have done it in everyday life? To me this is where all the arguments on the other side of aisle break down. JoeMo Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 Before Jesus was crucified - "they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it" (Matt. 27:34) After Jesus was crucified - "And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, and put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink. But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.” 50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit." (Matt. 27:48-49) "And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” (Mark 15:36) "The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine" (Luke 23:36) "A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit." John 19:29) THose are all of the verses associated with Jesus drinking wine on the cross. It looks like all 4 gospels agree that He took the wine right before He died. The only wine He didn't drink is what was offered to Him before they crucified Him, which was mixed with gall (possibly a narcotic). Quote

JoeMo Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 My verses came out of the English Standard Version; in which John's gospel does say He took it. I guess it depends on which translation one uses. I'm not smart enough to figure stuff out from the original Hebrew. It doesn't matter to me whether He took it or not. It doesn't change the fact that He's my Lord and Savior. Quote

I prefer the CJB, because its actually translated by a Jew not Christians, not that there translations are wrong per say, but Jews have a better grasp of the Hebrew language. That would include Pastor Bachelor, and quite a number of other SDA/Jewish Pastors. They know the culture, etc. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2

I have received helpings of prepared food, immediately after which I discovered it was spoiled and had a distinctly unsavory taste, enough to cause me to spew it violently out of my mouth. Considering Jesus perfect adherence to the Word, there is every good reason to believe that what He initially took to be an act of kindness He found was something He could not accept. in the same way He would not deign to give place to killing someone to protect His own life, the principle exemplified here, even though the act itself could be held as legally permissible by current criminal or civil law. Jesus reactions were the result of considering that He needed to be the perfect living example to be accepted as the substitute sacrifice for the sins of the world. God is Love! Jesus saves! joeb Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 I'll go along with pkrause and LHC on these texts. Looking at Strong's concordance for the words "had received" the Greek does not require Jesus to have drunk the wine to have received it. All this goes along with Jesus being the inspiration for the words: Wine is a mocker and strong drink is raging: Whoever is deceived thereby is not wise. Jesus is God. God doesn't change. Ergo, Jesus was not a user of alcohol. He was not going to violate His own statements and beliefs. I'd also say that Jesus was wiser than Solomon, and therefore, once again, not a user of alcohol.
