Common Sense Has Left The Building

School Makes 5-year-old sign a contract after doing THIS with a crayon

Stories of elementary schools overreacting to jokes, particularly ones that involve any mention or make-believe demonstration of a gun, are becoming more common place, but this one might just take the cake.

  •

A five-year-old girl from Alabama was forced to sign a suicide and homicide contract after pretending her crayon was a gun. Feel free to face palm.

Here’s her mom’s side of the story.

From Opposing Views:

There aren’t strong enough words in the English language that can even begin to describe the absurdity of the actions taken by the school in this incident.

“They told me she drew something that resembled a gun,” Rebecca told NBC News. “According to them she pointed a crayon at another student and said ‘pew pew.”

When Mobile County Public School officials saw the drawing, they forced the young girl, Elizabeth, to take a questionnaire evaluating any potential homicidal and suicidal thoughts. They then made Elizabeth sign a contract stating that she wouldn’t kill herself or anyone else at the school.

“While I was in the lobby waiting, they had my 5-year-old sign a contract about suicide and homicide,” Rebecca says. “There should be a different way to handle this situation. If this is protocol it needs to be looked at again.”

The school is trying to convince Rebecca to take her daughter to a psychologist. Rebecca refuses to do so, and is instead trying to get the incident removed from Elizabeth’s record.

When the phrase “pew pew” is labeled as some sort of threat to the safety of students, it’s obvious that common sense has left the building.

This is nothing more than over sensitivity to gun violence in schools, and is further proof that educators are buying wholesale into the fear mongering about firearms being spread about by the federal government.

Political correctness and anti-gun insanity have taken hold of way too many people.  Forcing a 5 year old to sign a contract?  This is nothing but intimidation and psychological abuse of a young child.

This is only the beginning of what is coming from our government when the leftists are in charge.  Many of them already believe anyone who holds a position that disagrees with them are by definition irrational.  What's the next step?  Incarceration for holding opposing views?

The administrators' behavior is indicative of a common cognitive disability related to underdevelopment in the right amygdala.  The function of this part of the brain includes processing the emotional significance of stimuli, especially threat assessment, so being stunted in this area tends to result in various kinds of irrational risk aversion.

The side of humanity that still insists that we are able to solve all of our own problems is exemplified in the story and will continue to get more foolish as time goes on, though probably with greater and greater tragic end results.

I wonder why there would be over-sensitivity to guns in schools?:adoh:

I'm not quite sure what good it will do to reply to you, but could it just possibly be that people have been separated from reality by the media?  The last statistics I've run across say guns are used 60 times more in self-defense and stopping crime than in any other way.  I know you won't see our socialist media admit to that, but that's how it goes in this world.  Truth isn't wanted or desired.

Interesting stat but do you think parents should not real care about gun violence in schools?

I wonder how the parents felt this last week with the school shootings in the NW. Perpetrated by a well liked student and seemingly normal.

Undo concern???? Head is sand....

Some would like us to believe we should have no worries at all!

The sad thing here is, how are these kids getting access to guns?? There so-called responsible parents are leaving them lying out and about?????

I don't think that was said anywhere. This is about a five year old girl that drew something that resembled a gun and then was forced to sign a suicide and homicide contract after pretending her crayon was a gun.  Do you believe this contract, a word a five year old wouldn't even comprehend concerning suicide and homicide, again something she would not really comprehend is a way to educate kids on guns?

Perhaps you are not aware of children at that age committing suicide. They do. There is obviously more to the story and what is happening in the girl's family.

While it is rare I know that it happens. Because a young child draws something that resembles a gun and a school over reacts means something else is going on?  Forcing a five year old to sign something like that is ridiculous.

When my sons were young they drew pictures or tried to  of all sorts of objects. They would try to carve guns from wood. We did the same, making rubber guns. No one has committed homicide or suicide over the years.

Public school administrators have been reacting irrationally to classroom doodles and imaginary guns for several years now, precisely because their brains are not capable of regulating their emotional reactions to threats in a way that would allow them to take measured intelligent precautions; so they must attempt a totalitarian approach to preventing mass shootings.

You reckon the concern is heightened because of continued school shootings? Parents and society are the first to ask and blame the school system when these actions take place. Their is a price for safety and to blame school officials is rather lame. Everyone will have an approach to the situation that they think is best, so how do schools decide witch approach to take? Would you have them error of the side of less or over protection??

No one is saying schools shouldn't have a high level of concern. Gear the concern to the level of the child. Or maybe have a higher level of concern for bullying and putting a stop to it. Bullying has caused several young people to commit suicide. I would venture to say far more than a little five year old drawing something that looked like a gun.

The protection that matters is whether, when someone actually decides to go on a killing spree, there are people in place to put a prompt stop to it.  Draconian zero-tolerance policies abuse the innocent far more often than they protect.

The problem with that thought is, when someone goes on a shooting spree like that, no one can see it coming. By the time people realize whats happening, many have been murdered.

A five year old signing a contract, something she could not even fully comprehend is somehow going to fix the problem?
