Who is "The Prophet" mentioned in John 1:21?

John 1:21   “Well then, who are you?” they asked. “Are you Elijah? “No,” he replied. “Are you the Prophet?”    “No.”

So who is "The Prophet"? Is it an Old Testament Prophet reincarnated, is it Muhummad, Ellen White, Edgar Cayce, or someone else?

If it is meant to be Jesus, why does He say that no He is not the Prophet?

There talking to John the Baptist, not Jesus.

Greetings Sojourner,

John 1:21   “Well then, who are you?” they asked. “Are you Elijah? “No,” he replied. “Are you the Prophet?”    “No.”

Pkrause is correct in saying that John 1:21 is the Jews asking John the Baptist:
John 1:19-21 (KJV): 19 And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? 20 And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ. 21 And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.

The Jews seemed to be referring to the prophecy given to Moses of a prophet that would arise like unto Moses:
Deuteronomy 18:18-19 (KJV): 18 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. 19 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.

Jesus seems to allude to this and accept this role as "the prophet" in the following:
John 12:44-50 (KJV): 44 Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. 45 And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me. 46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. 47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. 48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. 49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. 50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

Kind regards
Trevor
