Administrators Gail Posted November 23, 2005 Administrators Posted November 23, 2005 As a movie it was okay, but what does one do with the storyline? Here you have a couple who, in spite of themselves, married to others, fall in love. One gets intimations from the very beginning that Johnny loved June Carter from the time he was a child. As they reach adulthood they find each other touring together along with the likes of Waylon Jennings, Elvis, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis After the mess of their divorces was through, she finally agrees to marry him (after being asked repeatedly many times) and their marriage lasts a long 35 years, until they both die four months apart. The movie makes you feel as if they should have hooked up from the beginning. I know that is typical Hollywood, but judging from their devotion to each other for so many years, I am wondering if others around them felt the same way She was a Christian and I know that she struggled with the concept (reading a bio). Upon her death, Roseanne Cash wrote a glowing tribute to her as a person But... You know when I saw Dr. Zhivago, I couldn't help but think- "He has a perfectly good wife!" If this puzzles my mind, it must have certainly sent them for a loop at the time Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Amelia Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 Im curious. Was it this attraction they had for each other the impetus for the break down of each others marriages? I'm not sure, not having read enough of their history to get a clue. He has written a couple of books, but I am not familiar with them If I were to go by the movie, I would say that in his case it definitely had something to do with it, as his wife suspected and was jealous of June. But it didn't seem that the marriage was that great to begin with. However the movie portrayed June as trying to stay away from Johnny as much as possible, because of his self-destructive tendencies and because of her own convictions. She even married someone else after he made his feelings known to her. But as time went on she was a friend in need to him in his darkest hour. They seemed even as friends to have a bond that was very deep It was the stuff movies are made of, to be sure Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
ViLo Posted November 24, 2005 Posted November 24, 2005 This is one reason why we are not to love the world nor the things in it. Films such as this have no place in the Christian life. Quote
swisskris Posted November 24, 2005 Posted November 24, 2005 Vilo, you do have a valid point. The Bible says, "that by beholding we become changed" and "whatever is pure...think upon these things". In light of Scripture it would be difficult to argue a positive point for particapating in this activity. As we continue to view sin, we condition our minds to finding it less shocking, and in time, somehow "less sinful", we become more accepting and understanding of the excuses for behaviour for which there is no space in a Christian's life. It has been said that you can not handle dirt and expect to come away with clean hands. Every experience that we have makes an impression in our minds and influences the choices that we will make in the future. Once the mind is conditioned in a certain path, it is difficult to turn back and go another direction. By human nature we seek out that which has become familiar to us. The more we participate in secular activities, the less appealing and attractive the things of God become to us. The more we seek for a growing relationship with God, the less alluring the things of the world become. The more fulfilling contact we have through sharing our love of God and our lives with others, the less desire we have to steal away for a few short hours, vicariously experiencing what appears to be a more interesting reality. But once the picture stops and the light come on, our own lives can pale compared to the excitment we have just experienced. So, soon we are back again for another fix. Sometimes it is easy to justify the experience by saying, "Well, it is a true story and this is real life." But remember, just because it is a true, doesn't necessarily make it beneficial. Quote
Administrators Gail Posted November 24, 2005 Author Administrators Posted November 24, 2005 Very true... but are they never beneficial? I am sure that these people had parts of their lives that they regretted. She was a Christian and is shown as the avenue, besides his mother's influence, to bringing him back to the Lord They may have had circumstances which are probably different from the majority of us, but they still had struggles in trying to do the best they could with what they had Interesting... Some of the strangest stories in the world are true. If I were to ignore the ones that weren't good, I would have to bypass some Biblical bios as well. Not everyone there was as exemplary as Daniel. What counts is what people do with where they are at, and where they are going with it, and how we can learn from what the road they travelled (even if it means simply that we thought it was not a good choice!) Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
swisskris Posted November 24, 2005 Posted November 24, 2005 Gail, I would never suggest bypassing any Biblical bios. The Bible teaches both the results from following God and following a path of sin. All scripture is good for instruction. I agree we all need to learn from our experiences. Each of us has to choose for themselves. If you reread my previous post I said:"just because it is a true, doesn't necessarily make it beneficial". You are the one who said "never", not I. When someone gives a public testimony of their conversion, that is also a true story that includes sin, but it is shared to glorify God. Probably a little different emphasis than in most film or televison true stories. Quote
