Amelia Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 Anti Santa campaign launched A German group has launched a campaign to persuade people to turn their backs on Santa Claus and return to St Nicholas instead. The Santa-Free Zone group has printed off thousands of flyers and stickers and is handing them out in towns across Germany. Celebrity newsreader Peter Hahne is championing their campaign to ban Santa who he says was created to advertise Coca-Cola in 1931. He said it was time that Germany ditched Santa, who has commercialised Christmas, in favour of traditional Yuletide figures such as the Christkind and St. Nicholas. "St. Nicholas is not Father Christmas. The values associated with the former are selflessness, charity, solidarity, giving and sharing. He is perfect for getting across the Christmas message. "Santa Claus on the other hand is a product of a consumer society. He is a symbol of shopping and has got nothing to do with Saint Nicholas, who still teaches us today that giving does not make you poorer, but richer," said Hahne. I don't know if that proves anything, but I am sure that is the kind of rationale that would be readily used by Peter Hahne and the group he is championing. Coca-Cola invented Santa Claus in 1931? Everyone knows Coca-Cola is quintessential Americana, so it looks like these German folks are just bashing America again by implication. Admittedly, the modern celebration of Christmas is indeed totally commerical; and was in fact foisted onto society at large by merchants, when they seized upon what had been a minor Catholic observance (Christ's Mass) and started a propaganda campaign to lay a big guilt trip on parents if they did not buy Christmas presents for their children. Charles Dickens played a major part in this too when he wrote A Christmas Carol. So it was not just an American conspiracy, the British were also involved. Catholics too, since they originated the whole thing in the first place when Pope Julius I picked December 25 to honor Christ's birthday in place of the previous pagan festival of Saturn. That was also the date that the birth of Osiris was observed in ancient Babylon. But was St. Nicholas really a saint? If we venerate St. Nicholas, would we be venerating a Roman Catholic saint? What Peter Hahne and the anti-Santa German group are proposing is just as objectionable, to my way of thinking. Quote
