Tolerance

Do you find that as people get older they are more tolerant of others or less?

I do see some around me becoming less tolerant as they age. I understand this as a kind of 'elder syndrome': "I have all this life experience, sonny, and you're still wet behind the ears, so how dare you question me?"

I find myself becoming more tolerant as I age, because I make more and more mistakes and recognise how fallible I am, what a sinner, and in no position to judge anyone.

I don't see this as any particular credit to me, except possibly for being willing to look at myself unvarnished... and I know I'm by no means the only one.

Edit: And I'm an old lefty, so I find it much easier to tolerate the poor than the rich, so it's my challenge to learn how to be tolerant towards *everyone*.

Edit2: And what of those for whom 'tolerance' is a dirty word?

I chose makes no difference because I don't see tolerance as a function of aging.

I see tolerance as an outward manifestation of a heart of compassion, as our Saviour had. No matter when in one's life one comes to have that heart, tolerance and acceptance and a meeting of others needs begin to manifest in the life as fruit of the Spirit.

Hey, we had better be careful--We may be old ourselves someday---whatever that means. We are as old as we feel???? The pharisees lived by the letter of the law, but Jesus so often chose to tolerate the company of sinners instead of hanging with them. When a town turned their collective back on Jesus, the diciples experience righteous wrath and wanted to call fire down on that town, but Jesus was tolerant. Looking through the life of Christ, I see amazing tolerance.

Yet Jesus didn't tolerate the Phariseas robbing the widows or the vendors in the temple. He didn't tolerate the lies of Ananias and Sapphira much either. Which teaches us there are some things we ought to tolerate and others things we ought not.
