I mean, Who spoke these words:

1 And God spake all these words, saying,

2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

God always works through His Spirit which acts as a mediator between the one true God and His creation. Sometimes the Spirit takes the form of a thing such as a burning bush, pillar of smoke or an audible sound, sometimes it manifests as a person and sometimes as an Angel. As a mediator, the Spirit of God is always subordinate to God. Anything the Spirit says or does God gets the credit. When you have an interaction with the Spirit of God you're interacting with the presence, power and wisdom of God manifesting in a tangible way through His mediator. Whenever any particular manifestation of God is done, it's done and over with. In other words, the burning bush is no longer burning. The pillar of smoke and the pillar of fire is not in Egypt still burning and leading God's people. The only manifestation of God's presence, power and wisdom that remains is the man Jesus.

So, Who actually spoke what was recorded in Exo 20:2-17?

Is the "God" in v1 the Father, Son, Holy Spirit, or the 3 of them together?

It was the Father manifesting audibly through His Spirit. Who can completely understand the manifestations of the invisible eternal Creator. All we can do is piece the verses together to get a glimpse of what God has allowed us to see and know.

Deuteronomy 29:29 “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

...

So what exactly do you mean?

Are you trying to say it was the Spirit Who spoke? If Yes, then was the Spirit referring to Himself in v2?

Or,

Was the Spirit simply reading what was given by the Father for Him to read to Moses? If Yes, then do you have a Biblical basis for this?

Verse 1 is Moses telling us what God said. If I was speaking to Moses on Mt.Sinai Moses would have said, "And Scuba spoke all these words saying".

When God speaks He uses a mediator between Him and His creation and I believe that mediator is the Spirit of God. The Spirit of God can take on many forms but it's God speaking through these forms. Notice how God did not speak through His Son prior to His birth.

Hebrews 1:1-2 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophetshas in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds.

When God speaks through His mediator it's God speaking through His Spirit. Listen to the verses and tell me who is the voice speaking but who's words are being spoken?

Exodus 23:20-22 “Behold, I send an Angel before you to keep you in the way and to bring you into the place which I have prepared. Beware of Him and obey His voice; do not provoke Him, for He will not pardon your transgressions; for My name is in Him. But if you indeed obey His voice and do all that I speak, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries.

In these last days, God, through His Spirit, is speaking through the human mediator, the man Jesus.

1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.

John 3:34 For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure.

Can you just simply answer who was the "God" referred to in v1? Was it the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit, any 2 of them, or all the 3 of them?

Oh, I misunderstood. The God in verse 1 is our God and Father and is the same God and Father of Jesus after His birth.

John 20:17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’”

Thanks for the direct answer, my brother.

Hence in effect, Moses was telling us that God the Father said: "I am the LORD thy God."

Just wondering why many believe the God in v1 is our our Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ.

Some may be interested to see a thought from the Spirit of Prophecy on this question.

"It was Christ who spoke the law from Sinai. It was Christ who gave the law to Moses" on the tables of stone. (Signs of the Times Sep.4,1884)

Perhaps some of the Scriptures on this side of the question would be:

"For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus" (1Tim 2:5).

The one mediator, the one "go-between", between Israel and God in the wilderness, was Christ. True, at Sinai it was not then "the man Christ Jesus" conducting affairs between heaven and earth. (He had not yet taken on the limitations of humanity.) But I believe that Christ was, even then, the true "mediator".

And the law "was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator" (Gal 3:19) -- the same singular Mediator that would finally take on the infirmities of humanity. Many have taught that Moses was that mediator, and it is true that the people put him into that role/position, but the real mediator was Christ, the "Messenger of the covenant". (Mal 3:1.)

Since it was Christ who led Moses and the Israelites out of Egypt, He it was who was the pillar of cloud by day, and the pillar of fire by night. It was Christ, God the Son, who appeared to Moses atop Mt. Sinai, and gave Moses the 10 Commandments written by His own finger. Christ was the spiritual ROCK from which they drank (1 Corinthians 10:4).

It was Christ Jesus whom Moses, Aaron, Aaron's son Nadab and Abihu, and the 70 elders feasted before on a pavement of sapphire atop Mt Sinai (Exodus 24:9-11).

Yes, it was God the Son there on Mt. Sinai

The "God" in Exo 20:1 said in v2: "I am the LORD Thy God".

The all-caps "LORD" (v2) in the KJV is from the Hebrew hw"åhy>. This same word LORD (hw"åhy>) is used in Isa 61:1

KJV Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

This verse was quoted by Jesus (Luke 4:18) as referring to Him as the One sent by the LORD (hw"åhy>).

If Jesus admitted He was sent by the LORD (hw"åhy>), how can Jesus be the LORD (hw"åhy>)?

The great Creator (God the Father)assembled the heavenly host (Angels), that He (the Father) might in the presence of all the angels confer special honor upon His Son (the only begotten Son). The Son was seated on the throne with the Father, and the heavenly throng of holy angels was gathered around them. The Father then made known that it was ordained by Himself that Christ, His Son, should be equal with Himself; so that wherever was the presence of His Son, it was as His own presence. The word of the Son was to be obeyed as readily as the word of the Father. His Son He had invested with authority to command the heavenly host. Especially was His Son to work in union with Himself in the anticipated creation of the earth and every living thing that should exist upon the earth. His Son would carry out His (Fathers) will and His purposes but would do nothing of Himself alone. The Father's will would be fulfilled in Him. {SR 13.2}

It was the Son of God - speaking as the representative and agent of His Father.

His words were the FATHER's words - but they were spoken by the Son of God.

The Son was and is the mediator.

"There is ONE Mediator, BETWEEN God and man".

He has NEVER spoken by His own authority.

Not before His incarnation. - Not during - Not since.

He has always spoken the words that His Father gave Him to speak.

The Father's NAME (authority) was "in Him" (in the angel in the pillar).

To say "My name is in Him" was also a Hebrew way of saying - He is My son.

Thanks Cheryl,

The SR 13 quote is a very relevant statement for us as a people.

Some read it that the "special honor" conferred upon the Son was something "new" -- something that the Son had not previously possessed. But as you have highlighted, it came to the point where that "honor" (i.e. that equality with the Father) needed to be "made known" to the angels.

Because the Son's physical glory had been less than the Father's physical glory (because the Son, existed in the form of an arch-angel,) Lucifer imagined that there was reason to question His authority/superiority. Lucifer thought, I suggest, that he and Michael were equals, and that the Father had shown Michael undue favouritism by allowing Him alone to enter directly into His presence.

I suggest too, that it was only when Michael's position began to be questioned/challenged, that the Father assembled the angels to 'make known' Michael's true position.

Even in heaven Michael did not esteem it a thing to be grasped to be in an outward form equal to the Father.

It doesn't matter.  whomever it was - individually or collectively - it was God; and He/They spoke for all of Them (or the One of Them).

KJV Jeremiah 16:21 Therefore, behold, I will this once cause them to know, I will cause them to know mine hand and my might; and they shall know that my name is The LORD.

In the verse above, the Hebrew name hw"åhy> is translated into "Jehovah" in the ASV and "LORD" in the KJV.  He -  hw"åhy> - Himself said, "my name is hw"åhy> ", not "our name is  hw"åhy ". I think Scriptures are pretty clear that the Father's name is hw"åhy>, the One Who sent Jesus (Isa 61:1), the One Who spoke and wrote the Ten Commandments (Deut 9:10; 10:1, 2).

Scuba,

You have a problem with your interpretation of Exodus 20:1,2.  In both cases the word God is translated as such from the Hebrew word elohyim.  That word is plural, not singular.  Thus it refers to the Godhead, not a specific individual of the Godhead.

430 'elohiym el-o-heem' plural of 433; gods in the ordinary sense; but specifically used (in the plural thus, especially with the article) of the supreme God; occasionally applied by way of deference to magistrates; and sometimes as a superlative:--angels, X exceeding, God (gods)(-dess, -ly), X (very) great, judges, X mighty. see HEBREW for 0433

Strong's data:

0430 ~yhil{a/ 'elohiym {el-o-heem'}

Meaning:  1) (plural) 1a) rulers, judges 1b) divine ones 1c) angels 1d) gods 2) (plural intensive - singular meaning) 2a) god, goddess 2b) godlike one 2c) works or special possessions of God 2d) the (true) God 2e) God

Origin:  plural of 0433; TWOT - 93c; n m p

Usage:  AV - God 2346, god 244, judge 5, GOD 1, goddess 2, great 2, mighty 2, angels 1, exceeding 1, God-ward + 04136 1, godly 1; 2606

Note that 'elohiym is plural intensive - singular meaning. And rightly so because in v2 'elohiym says "I am hw"åhy>", NOT "we are hw"åhy>".

He Who speaks in Exo 20:1, 2 is clearly singular. He is the Father, hw"åhy, the One Who sent Jesus (Isa 61:1).

The singular form of Elohim is Eloha, and it is found in the Bible in a few places.

My point is that if God were singular, Eloha must be the form used in all cases. However, the plural Elohim is used in the overwhelming majority of instances - indicating that it could be grasped even in Moses' time that the Living God is plural, yet one, at the same time.
