I shall not quote chapter, verse nor give credits BUT....... for the first time I have read

a sideways glance at Ben Carson's view on Evolution and in the same paragraph mention that he is a Republican and a Seventh-day Adventist.   I wonder what's next?????? Nuff Sed

And because of that one should not be surprised that pretty much anything is fair game in that arena.

"Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good."

"Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal."

"I love God only as much as the person I love the least."

*Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth.

If Ben Carson decides to run, we can expect that anything will be subject to discussion in the media.  If Ben Carson is seen as a possible successful elected official, we can expect that everything will be subject to discussion in the media.

As this develops, the SDA denomination will become a significant focus of the media.  It's beliefs, life style recommendations, administrative policies, divisions within the denomination and racial policies will all be subject to review by the world at large.

We will be questioned as to why in the 21st Cent. we have racially divided Conferences.

As I have been asked (This came into a conversation 5 days ago.), we will be asked why as a denomination that had a woman as a co-founder, we allow women to do most (not all) of the work but do not give women the recognition that they deserve for doing the work.  (By the way, remember Mary Kay Silver and Pacific Press.)

We will have Cliff Goldstein compared with Ervin Taylor.   We will have the SDA Church in Germany compared on some issues with the denomination in the United States.

We will be asked about the SDA Reform Movement.

Eventually some will get into asking Ben about his politics.   But, do not be deceived.  The denomination, depending upon where Dr. Ben is in the political process, will face a lot of questions.

by contrast, did the LDS church get discussed extensively by the media when Mitt Romney was running for office?  I may be wrong, but to my recollection, the LDS religion wasn't much of an issue...

why would religion be more of an issue for Dr Carson than it was for Mitt Romney?  (or Catholicism and JFK?)

If I were to make a guess, it would be because he is new. MR has been around a long time. There could be some other reasons also, so it would be interesting to do a little research in that area.

Pam:

Yours answers might be:

1)  The SDA denomination is probably less known, in matters that affect political office, than is the LDS church;

      a) THE LDS church has in recent times resolved issues with Africans Americans.  We still have divided conferences.

'b)  Women's issues, I believe, will be more of an issue with us than with the Mormons.

      c)  Sabbath observance and political life will affect us more than the Mormons.

      d)  War and defense of our country will be more of an issue.

      e)  Issues of Church &I State will be more of an issue.

      f)   Roman Catholic relationships will be more of an issue.

How much more do you want?

I am out of time.

I don't think the LDS church is known much at all in matters that affect political office...

 a) THE LDS church has in recent times resolved issues with Africans Americans.  We still have divided conferences.

I suppose someone could try to make an issue about that, but I think it might be difficult to make it of great import..

'b)  Women's issues, I believe, will be more of an issue with us than with the Mormons.

I disagree.  I don't think there would be much more than someone who is Catholic or LDS.

c)  Sabbath observance and political life will affect us more than the Mormons.

I personally don't think that's such a big issue at this time, but I realize some might.

d)  War and defense of our country will be more of an issue.

perhaps... perhaps not..  (looking at war and defense of the US within a historical context would lead me to think not..)

e)  Issues of Church &I State will be more of an issue.

why would this be more of an issue for Dr. Carson?

  f)   Roman Catholic relationships will be more of an issue.

why would this be more of an issue?  (other than the fact that some SDAs get histrionic about anything having to do with the Catholic church... I highly doubt that Dr. Carson would be kissing the Pope's ring...)

I suspect Ben Carson v Ben Carson is more accurate.

When he flames out - and he will - it will be something he says.

The media can make or break a candidate.  Even the most  innocuous statement taken out of context can be made to appear most egregious.  There is no question in my mind that  most of the networks and newspapers lean to the left with one obvious exception.

Had to laugh when I saw this post. I totally agree, tis the human way of communication. We talk about it quite often through out the many topics of this Forum site. Lets not be pointing our fingers at the media when it is the standard of practice with in most topics of conversation.

I highly doubt it will be that extensive.  Romney's Morman status hardly phased his nomination among his Republican peers (where question of religion matters).   Democratic side may take an issue with him rejecting evolution and making his religious view to be an issue, but you can only ride that so long.  Examining Obama's religious background and connections didn't really get conservatives too far in either election.   What killed Romney was not his religious views... but his fellow republicans who didn't like him very much during the primaries enough to pour mountains of dirt that he never could really recover from.

Either way,  I really don't see why that would be a bad thing for the church in general.   I remember when Book of Mormon musical came out, and Mormons were excited about the publicity in spite of the skewed nature of the musical.   I'd think that this would be a boon for Adventist denomination, since it'd lift it from relative obscurity into mainstream in terms of being able to address any possible misconceptions and provide "hey we are here" type of publicity that would otherwise cost millions of dollars to achieve.

Being a conservative of faith, the media vultures will pick Mr. Carson to the bone as they try to make him look like an imbecile for his personal beliefs.

Although this country needs honest and thoughtful leaders like Mr. Carson, we only seem to be able to elect liars and thieves.

That's why honest people don't get elected!!!!! At least not in the last few elections!!!! And if they do, they soon change or they get smart and resign!!

It's not that he's honest and thoughtful, it's that a large percentage of Americans think that his ideas are some combination of simplistic, naive, outdated, dangerous, and wrong.

No doubt he's a brilliant pediatric neurosurgeon, but you can fit his understanding of economics on a bumper sticker and that scares people.
