I'm sure this is somewhere on the site but I couldn't find it. And I'm sure this is a noob question but,

Will someone explain to me the differences between the Spirit, Soul and Body. I believe in sleeping after death like other SDA's but where do the spirit, soul and body fit in. I've been trying to share with someone the concept of soul sleep and not immediately going to heaven but we get hung up on this topic. Honestly, I myself don't really understand the differences. Any responses appreciated.

This is the way I see it. Not necessarily a "doctrine".

"And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul" (Gen. 2:7)

"Dust" = Body

"Breath" = Spirit

"Body" + "Spirit" = "Soul"; just like "wood" + "nails" = "crate"

Man doesn't "have" a soul; he "IS" a soul.

And the recognition of that leads to the reality that there is no immortal being who is apart apart from God.

4“Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine. The soul who sins will die....Ezekiel 18

Effectively discrediting the two false doctrines that leave the uninformed individual extremely susceptible to receiving the mark of the beast.

12He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life.John 5

28"Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. 29"Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father.……30"But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31"So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows....Matthew 10

The soul is the animated person or the being. Notice how when the life or being is lost it's really the soul that is lost.

Matthew 16:25-26 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

The body is what allow for animation. The spirit is like the battery that energizes.

James 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

You could say the toy without the battery is dead.

Here's another viewpoint:

Spirit---the connecting force between living beings and YHVH, who uses Spirit to monitor and record human thoughts and actions. Spirit enables YHVH to be aware of even a bird falling from the sky. Spirit was used in the creation of life on Earth, and was used to heal the sick, raise the dead, enable Christ to know the thoughts of others, communicate with his Father, and know future events.

Soul---the stored collection of one person's lifetime of memories tagged to that person's unique DNA. Upon resurrection by Spirit these memories are downloaded into the resurrected body using their DNA, thus recreating that individual. When Jesus was resurrected, his memories were downloaded into a different body, not his original one, thus, no one recognized him after resurrection.

Body---Kept alive in normal day-to-day life by Spirit, but when the body dies, Spirit no longer connects the mind to YHVH.

I like to use the video recorder example.

The camcorder is the body, the video tape is the soul and the battery is the Spirit. The video tape contains everything that happened within the lifetime of the camcorder. When you take the battery out the memory is still on the video tape. If you smash the camcorder the memory is still on the video tape. Buy a brand new camcorder and put the battery back in and watch the life of the camcorder on the video.

Now as far as 1 Thessalonians 5:23 goes I believe the spirit in that verse is not referring to the life giving force of the Spirit of God. Listen.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The spirit in the above verse is referring to the disposition of mind or mindset of the person. Let me explain. The word, spirit, in the Bible can refer to one's disposition such as being angry, being peaceful, being happy, being bitter and so on. God desires us to be healthy in body (physical), soul (character) and spirit (disposition of the mind).
