That my love for my mother is the same now that she is gone, and will still be around once I am also dead? Is there something about love that is eternal? Ours or God's? Or are the effects of love that which never fails? Or ends? Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

Stewart (SDA) Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 Gail, I suggest that love never "fails" in the sense that man-made structures can "fail" when they come under tremendous stress. We can be sure, I would assert, that God loves with an "everlasting love", and there is nothing any of us can do to stop it. So Gail, I would say that it is both -- Divine love never ends [for anyone], purely because it does not fail, or collapse, when it comes under sustained attack. I believe that God originally loved Lucifer with an "everlasting love", and that God continues to love His enemies (even His most personal enemy,) with the same unfailing love. Contrarily, does our love die when we die Human love, which is based on self-love (iniquity) dies when we die. Agape is a love humans cannot produce. It can only be experienced as the true believer rest in the finished work of Christ. Since agape comes from God it does not die when we die because it is not ours by native right. Quote

Gail, I think an explicit Scripture, relating to your second question, would be Ecclesiastes 9:5-6. "For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished..." While a human being is dead they have no emotion. But Paul was "persuaded that neither death nor life" has the power to separate a person from God's love. (Rom 8:38-39.) So it is true, death cannot separate anyone from God's love, even though the person no longer "exists". (And of course God is no respecter of persons... whether Christian or non-Christian, God's love endures for those that are dead.) I definitely agree with your thought that it is "the eternal nature of God that makes His love endure." The love of God is such a wonderful theme ! Robert 1 Quote
