Are we a creedal church?

Early in the history of the SDA Church, its founders proclaimed that we are not a denomination that believes in a Creed.  They said:  The Bible is our only Creed.

 

Some have faulted the so-called 28 for becoming a Creed.   I am one of those who suggest that the 28 is used by more and more people as a Creed.

 

I am not wanting to discuss the above in this thread.  Rather, I am going to suggest that the Bible does outline a Christian Creed that we can date back to about 54 A.D.  This is not pre-Cristian.  It is centered in Christ.  It seems to be laid out in the manner of a Creed.

 

My question:  Can you think of any Biblical passage that might be the 1st Christian Creed?

 

If you can, give us a Biblical reference for people to look up and read.

 

NOTE:  I am not expecting you to give a detailed reason for thinking that the passage you reference is a Creed.  Simply give us the passage.

 

Or, tell us that such does not exist.

Answer:  1st Corinthians 15:3-8, believed to be written by Paul prior to 51 AD, possibly between 31 AD and 38 AD.

 

Elements of the Creed:

1) Christ died for our sins--V 3.

2) Christ was buried--v 4.

3) Christ was raised from the dead on the 3rd day--v 4.

4) Christ then appeared to Peter--v 5.

5) Then to the 12--v 5.

6) Then he was seen by 500--v 6.

7) Then to James--v 7.

8) Then to all of the apostles--v 7.

9) Then Christ appeared to the author of  1st Corinthians--Paul--v 9.

I notice that no one is dealing with this topic. I just want to say this I believe in our original beliefs and not the 28 principles because we have changed. We are just like the other Protestant Church who does not really protest but have join back to the Catholic church and have we! I am not interested in any other creed but one and mine is the Bible!

I like to view it as the principle of "living by every word of God" rather than pinpointing doctrine into a checklist. Thank you for bringing up the topic- I have one customer that has enquired about our beliefs and I think he can benefit by this thought.

IOW I believe that we as a people should know what the Bible teaches, or what it has taught us personally.
