D_Bishop Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 I'm not on food stamps. I don't know about the future but up until now no food stamps. I don't use drugs other than caffeine and I am trying to kick that. With that in mind I buy my own junk food. Quote

Moderators Gerr Posted May 23, 2015 Moderators Posted May 23, 2015 Do you agree with this bill? Should this be promoted in all 50 states? Members phkrause Posted May 23, 2015 Members Posted May 23, 2015 I for one agree with this. If your gonna get free food from the state, than you take what they give you. Also if you read this thread from the beginning, I posted that in the two states that we've lived, Massachusetts & Florida, there was no junk food on our wic card here or on our wic checks up north. Lauralea Posted May 24, 2015 Posted May 24, 2015 (edited) Drug testing is not wrong- I would say whatever works for the state. Food limits are complicated- like popcorn is healthy for example- so if they are going to do them they should have a nutritionist weigh in on what is junk food IMO and since some people cannot eat certain foods. WIC already has a bunch of appropriate restrictions and is for infants and young children and pregnant and nursing moms and it has worked fine. Incidentally WIC saves a lot of money in preventing complications from sick or malnourished infants and strongly teaches no drugs. It also teaches pregnant moms should not smoke or drink and saves infant lives. Edited May 24, 2015 by Lauralea Naomi 1 Quote Behold what manner of love the Father hath given unto us.

Yes we have to bring in the grandkids and see the nutritionist every few months. And they ask about what they eat, etc. Than as I've mentioned on a few other posts they fill out a report and let us know what food we can buy and its loaded on the card or on the checks when we lived in Massachusetts. I believe they do a great job. Lauralea and Naomi 2 Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2

Administrators Naomi Posted May 26, 2015 Administrators Posted May 26, 2015 I must admit that I did not read the article in it's entirety, however drug testing is advisable, so is limiting junk food. That being said we have a three-church district each of which participates in a partially state/government funded food program. It is necessary to keep records of income & number in the household. . I make an effort to divide my days to help in each church on a semi-regular basis. Therefore I see a cross section of the people who regularly come for food. The food that we have available is selected by our members who volunteer. It may be processed food but it is acceptable: other than eggs, milk and potatoes, meat (usually chicken) is limited. The people who come to our food banks are treated with the dignity they deserve, some ask for prayer and we supply them with spiritually motivated materials ... if they request it. I really haven't observed those who are abusing the system and am so happy that there are safety nets in place to help those who hit the wall. It could happen to anyone .... it could happen to me ... to you!!! phkrause 1 Quote If your dreams are not big enough to scare you, they are not big enough for God

I really haven't observed those who are abusing the system and am so happy that there are safety nets in place to help those who hit the wall. It could happen to anyone .... it could happen to me ... to you!!! The article pertains to drug testing and junk food. We have several churches in our area that have food available one day a week. Plus a extremely generous community food shelf. There are no income restrictions on either the food self or the churches. Only number in household and proof of residence. This bill is directed at food stamp usage. Those using the food shelf and the church programs do not have a lot of choices for junk food. It is a broad spectrum of food, most would do fine. We have a family owned grocery chain here that provides a enormous amount of staples and very expensive food stuffs. It is not uncommon for families to receive T-Bone,Porterhouse steaks and roasts along with the less expensive cuts of meat. Free range whole chicken and fryers are always available. No soda, frozen dinners or prepared food. The food shelf recipients consist of more people that appear to be 45 or older. Because of the ill behaved unruly children of the younger families they have had to go to a "no children allowed" rule which of course the stores cannot do,which may explain the smaller number of young families. One church provides root vegetables and other produce along with free clothing. The free clothing has been stopped due to abuse of some that were taking everything they could carry and then selling at flea markets. The food shelf does give a voucher once a month to a community thrift shop for free clothing for those in need. The food shelf is extremely generous in the amount of food per family. A family of two leaves with 2-300.00 in groceries once a monthThis isn't about hating the poor as was implied. It is using common sense.
