bonnie Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 Minn. school kids visit sex toy shop for class Melanie Eversley, USA TODAY3:31 p.m. PDT June 2, 2015 A Minneapolis private school is getting some attention because about two dozen of its students recently visited a Twin Cities sex toy shop as part of a sex education class. An employee who answered the telephone at The Smitten Kitten shop on Tuesday said she could not discuss the visit and took a message for the manager, but parents of children who attend the Gaia Democratic School told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that they were miffed. "It's just a major breach of trust," Lynn Floyd, the parent of an 11-year-old and 13-year who took part in the risque field trip, told the news organization. "You can't erase those images." No one could be reached late Tuesday afternoon at the school, but Director Starri Hedges, who also teaches sex education, told the Star Tribune that she wanted to provide a safe way for students to learn about sex. "What I saw happening on our trip, I thought it was beautiful because kids could talk to these sex educators without any shame, without any fear," Hedges said. Hedges acknowledged that she might have communicated better to the parents, according to a Minnesota Public Radio news blog. "It was certainly the first time we have taken that kind of field trip and it will probably be our last, which I feel bad (about) because the kids had so much fun," MPR quoted Hedges as saying. The trip culminated a class that lasted several months. Lloyd's children have been pulled out of the school. The Smitten Kitten describes itself on its website as a "progressive sex toy store for everyone." Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. Liz Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 I'm surprised the shop owners allowed this as well. The toy shops around here have a sign that says "No one under 18 admitted". bonnie Posted June 4, 2015 Author Posted June 4, 2015 One would think. First question I have is how parents weren't notified of this field trip? Or if this school has a policy of a blanket permissiond trips in the beginning of yhe year. The idiocy of this teacher in a private school Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted June 4, 2015 Moderators Posted June 4, 2015 WERe the parents notified of a trip off campus? IF they were notified, did the parents not inquire as to the purpose and destination of the trip? Many questions and issues could be raised. But, it was a private school. But, did it receive government funding of any sort? Quote Gregory

Liz Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 There seems to have been a huge lack of communication between the school and the parents. But like I said before, I can't believe the store owners/managers went along with this as well. They must be more liberal there than here, I can't imagine a manager around here taking that phone call. Every field trip I've been on, had little treats to remind one of the trip, from the bank we all got little piggy banks, pens/pencils from different businesses, etc. I would love to know what the treat was they took home from this outing. bonnie Posted June 4, 2015 Author Posted June 4, 2015 More than miscommunication is the mentality of a teacher that originally thought this to be a good idea for educational purposes Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. Guest Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 Well....I don't think this is the greatest way to teach young people about sex, but I will say it's better than what they learn online and from their friends. As a Pathfinder leader for 5 years I've had many conversations with youth aged 10-15 regarding ridiculous notions they've had about sex. They wanted to talk with an adult, but they ALL said they would NEVER ask their parents about it. Quote
bonnie Posted June 4, 2015 Author Posted June 4, 2015 (edited) It is up to the parents to monitor what is read online. Regardless of visits to sex toy shops there will always be misinformation among young teens. Maybe in your thinking sex toy information is an essential part of sex education for middle school children but not for mine. And this will somehow answer the questions they are to embarrassed to ask their parents HOW Edited June 4, 2015 by bonnie Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted June 4, 2015 Moderators Posted June 4, 2015 Bonnie, I am well aware of the questions that you asked. AS to government funding: That is an issue that impacts on what the parent can do about such a thing. I would assume that some of the parents would want to do something. Quote Gregory

Liz Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 I just can't get over the store owner/manager allowing this. Could you imagine being a customer there when a school bus of children shows up? I mean, really, there goes revenue, because you know those kids can't buy anything, and a grown up sure isn't going to buy anything with those kids there.
