Scuba Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 (edited) Deuteronomy 12:29-31 When the LORD goes ahead of you and destroys the nations and you live in their land, do not fall into the trap of following their customs and worshiping their gods. Do not inquire about their gods, saying, ‘How do these nations worship their gods? I want to follow their example.’ You must not worship the LORD the way the other nations worship their gods, for they perform for their gods everything the LORD hates. Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted June 6, 2015 Moderators Posted June 6, 2015 (edited) The above is a 32 minute screed aganst the Roman Catholic Church. I failed to find anything about GMO's. Perhaps I missed it. But, the title appears to me to be deceptive. Edited June 6, 2015 by Gregory Matthews Quote Gregory
Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted June 6, 2015 Moderators Posted June 6, 2015 (edited) THE DIGNITY OF THE PRIESTHOOD by Ligouri: I am not impressed by a citation to a work that is more than 100 years old. If someone were to write about the SDA Church and its beliefs, I would not expect them to cite from people of 100 years ago, unless it was a historical study. Further, a somewhat superficial review of a reference in the video reveals that it probably came from a book of about 480 pages in length, which was only one of the books in a large set. I hardly believe that the people who produced the video read their citation in context. I doubt that they read much of the hundreds of pages that Ligouri wrote. So, I have little reason to believe that their citations were accurate. Edited June 6, 2015 by Gregory Matthews Quote Gregory
Scuba Posted June 6, 2015 Author Posted June 6, 2015 The use of the GMO was a metaphor in that in the same way man made GMOs are injected into God's perfect food man made doctrines are injected in to God's perfect ways. As far as using a quote that is of 100 years old does not matter because they still belief the same things. Even the SDA use 100 old quotes to prove their case of the Papacy being the man of sin. Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted June 6, 2015 Moderators Posted June 6, 2015 (edited) As far as using a quote that is of 100 years old does not matter because they still belief the same things. If the Roman Catholic Church still believes the same things, it should be fairly easy for you to demonstrate such from current teachings. It may be true (and it may not be true) that it believes the same as has been suggested by the quotes. However, your statement that it believes the same fails to reflect the changes in doctrine and practice that have taken place over the years. In any case, the quotes in the video fail to demonstrate that they are accurately used and in context. The video simply is poor scholarship and your use of GMO was deceptive. If you had wanted to use it as a metaphor you could have explained it. That might have been an appropriate use. Edited June 6, 2015 by Gregory Matthews Quote Gregory
Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted June 6, 2015 Moderators Posted June 6, 2015 There is another failure to understand the RC Church: There are many teachings that are taught by high level leaders in the Roman Catholic Church and are accepted by many, but have not risen to the level of required doctrine. IOW, members are not required to believe in them in order to be Roman Catholic and some do not accept those doctrines. This is also true for the SDA Church. That is why we have the differences that exist as to the role of women, the nature of Christ, standards for membership and many more issues. Quote Gregory

The papacy is the man of sin who sits in the temple of God claiming to be God. The papacy did in fact chang God's times and law. This is backed by both historical and biblical fact. The use of the GMO metaphor is not deceptive. Stop protecting and defending the Beast. I did not address any of those issues. So, you happen to believe that the papacy did actually change God's times and law? Astounding. I believe that they attempted to do so. I do not believe that they did it. O.K. You just poorly stated what you wanted to say and you also believe like me that they only attempted to do so. I will give you that. Your use of the GMO metaphor is very deceptive to people who do not understand that you were using a metaphor. You could have explained it and that then would not have been a problem. Protecting and defending the beast: A central aspect of the character of God is honesty and integrity. God is not honored when even the beast is attacked by dishonest means. Quote Gregory

Ron Amnsn Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 If the Roman Catholic Church still believes the same things, it should be fairly easy for you to demonstrate such from current teachings. Gregory, although I agree with you that most of the Catholic-bashing is unfruitful, I think it is also possible to err by defending the Catholics too much. If the Roman Catholic Church taught something 100 years ago and has not renounced that, then it's likely still part of the belief system. Over the past 100 years the Catholics have become more careful about how they state things, so they may not be publishing things now in the same bold way they did before.Every time an SDA quotes Ellen White, they are quoting a teaching more than 100 years old. Yet most SDA's still believe most of what is contained in those old quotations. Quote
Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted June 8, 2015 Moderators Posted June 8, 2015 My point was that people often fail to distinguish between what all Roman Catholics are expected to believe and what is optional and not believed by all. In addition, let us look at it another way: A conservative, moderate, liberal SDA theologian may write on some doctrine. Does that mean that it is a SDA teaching? No. It only means that it is the teaching of a SDA member/professor/administrator. By the same token, when a Roman Catholic priest, Bishop, writes on some doctrine, does that mean that it is a Roman Catholic teaching? No. It only means that it is a teaching of that person.
