A Family Tradition?

When I was young we would sometimes go to the church and they would have a diner and song service. Or, more often, stay home and mother would play the piano and sing hymns.

At bedtime our family had a special way of celebrating the New Year. At bedtime we would each take a hymnal and in the dark turn down the corner of a page.

In the morning we would anxiously open the book to see what our "theme song" would be for the new year.

Somehow, over the years, this has vanished from our family ritual. That is, except for "die-hard" me who still opens the song book in the dark.

Do you have any unique family traditions for the New Year?

Hey Doug,

Mother's family were from Russia and they also have lots of cabbage. Yes, we had the cabbage for luck on New Years.

Daddy's family were Italian and we had pastries (I'm sure K can relate) and pasta dishes. But, we lived in Okla and you must eat blackeyed peas & corn bread for luck.

WOW ROF LOL Only just now realized the crazy combination of foods which we ate for luck on New Years <img src="/ubbtreads/images/graemlins/laughhard.gif" alt="" />

But it stuck, and I usually make it a point of eating a little of it all. Not that I believe it really brings good luck; but I don't want to take a chance <img src="/ubbtreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

We have a bonfire, set off fire works, drink lots of hot cocoa and hot apple cider, and eat chili and smores.

Then at midnight we fire off the ultimate mortar shell rounds for the best fireworks, shout "Happy New Year" and snuggle down to watch the bonfire burn out.

We generally have corned beef, cabbage, and black-eyed peas not so much for luck, but because it's the only day out of the year my husband can get me to make it for him... LOL!
