During the 1983 – 2005 civil wars in Sudan, some 20,000 young males were orphaned.  Over the years, they were shuttled from country to country, traveling within Africa and to States outside of Africa.  Some ended up living in the United States.

One such person saw his parents alive for the last time at the age of six years.   At one point in his travels, he lived with a Seventh-day Adventist family in Africa and at that time he joined the church.  After life in refugee camps, he eventually came to the United States.  During his travels in the U.S. he always searched for a SDA Church that he could attend.

Presently, he attends that Sabbath school class that I attend.  Recently we learned that he is about to become the Father of twins.  He is a hard worker, employed at a low income job.  The mother of the twins is also a hard worker employed in a low income position.

As a class, we knew that the couple did not have anything that they needed for the coming babies—a boy and a girl.  We have a fund set up to be used for needs.   The class immediately authorized my wife to spend up to $1,500 to purchase the basic things that the two babies would need.  Yesterday we held a shower for the couple and the class presented them with the more than $2,000 worth of things that my wife had been able to purchase, plus additional gifts that came from congregational members.

As a congregation and as a Sabbath School Class, we believe in being involved in the community and in needs of its people.

34“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. 35For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. 36I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’

37“Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? 39When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’

40“And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters,f you were doing it to me!’....Matthew 25

Yes, and there have been movies, pays and books written about them.  And one attends the church that I attend.
