Manhunt follows attack on historic black South Carolina church

CHARLESTON, S.C. (Reuters) - Police in Charleston, South Carolina, were searching for a white gunman on Thursday who killed nine people in a historic African-American church, in an attack that police and the city's mayor described as a hate crime.

The shooter, a 21-year-old white man with sandy blond hair, sat with churchgoers inside Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church for about an hour on Wednesday before opening fire, Police Chief Gregory Mullen said.

The victims included Reverend Clementa Pinckney, the church's pastor and a Democratic member of the state Senate, his cousin and fellow state senator, Kent Williams, told CNN.

The gunman is extremely dangerous, Mullen said, and police did not have a sense of where he might be.

"This is an unfathomable and unspeakable act by somebody filled with hate and with a deranged mind," Charleston Mayor Joe Riley told reporters.

Six females and three males died in the attack, Mullen said.

The shooting recalled the 1963 bombing of an African-American church in Birmingham, Alabama, that killed four girls and galvanized the civil rights movement of the 1960s.

Must have been quite a backstory leading up to this. There is a fine line between love and hate; I suspect this man's emotions were tied very closely to the church and the people in the Wednesday night gathering.

Why?

Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence.

Once again I was wrong...

Charleston church shooting suspect Dylann Roof is in custody in North Carolina, a senior law enforcement official tells CNN's Deborah Feyerick.

President Barack Obama is scheduled to deliver a statement about the church shooting at 11:45 a.m. ET, the White House says.

I'm glad they caught him. He looks dead, I wonder if he looked like that before he started shooting, or whether the act caused him to look like that?

Why?

I thought he may have been a regular member since he was attending the Wednesday night group. Could be wrong. But maybe I was right. Dunno.

Am I wrong, or is hate something that a person suffers from and misery just loves company?

I don't get hate, I just don't.

I know it happened. Similar acts has been carried out before, like in Fort Worth Tx back in 1999. Yet, I am still grasping the fact that someone would pull off such a cold, evil act in a church, during Wednesday night prayer meeting.

I think he chose that church because the pastor is also a state senator, and a political leader in that community.  That church is also a symbol of black history, etc.  None of that justifies the act, or comes close to doing so.

It is my observation that there is something about owning a automatic handgun, or any handgun makes people a little bit, or a lot, over the edge.  I am not trying to get a gun debate going. If one starts I won't participate.  That was just a personal observation that I have witnessed on more than one occasion.

the man didn't go out and buy a gun...it was (stupidly) given to him by his father as a birthday gift..

If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony.

Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?

Exactly! The father should also be held responsible for this. To just hand out guns as if they are candy, is very sad.

Just some of the salient, powerful points from Stewart's monologue...........

What blows my mind is the disparity of response between when we think people that are foreign are going to kill us and us killing ourselves.

“The Confederate flag flies over South Carolina, and the roads are named for Confederate generals,” Mr. Stewart continued, “and the white guy is the one who feels like his country is being taken away from him.”

In South Carolina, the roads that black people drive on are named for Confederate generals who fought to keep black people from being able to drive freely on that road. That’s insanity. That’s racial wallpaper. That’s — that’s — you can’t allow that, you know.

Al-Qaeda, all those guys, ISIS, they’re not s— compared to the damage that we can apparently do to ourselves on a regular basis.

An honest question. What don't you get about this hate? It seems quite simple and straightforward to me.
